The New York Yankees on paper look stacked thanks to adding Giancarlo Stanton in the offseason. Stanton has been earning his paycheck thus far, and overall, he looks happy to be out of Miami and with the Yankees in the Bronx. He instantly went from a dysfunctional organization to a team who has the potential to win a World Series.
Stanton may be the reason that the Yankees do get to the World Series. The Yanks didn’t have that extra piece to get them over the hump a year ago, but they think Stanton may be the boost needed to get them to the promise land. The Astros certainly did not like to see him go to the Yankees. They were perfectly content with him hanging out on a losing franchise like the Marlins.
Stanton has hit 2 long balls, 4 RBIs, and a batting average of .211. It didn’t take long for Yankee fans to be hypercritical of Stanton, who was booed a couple of days ago for striking out five times. People care about baseball in New York, this isn’t Miami anymore. Despite getting booed, Stanton is going to be fine, but there is more pressure on his shoulders here in the Bronx vs Florida. The Yankees have jumped out to a 4-2 start, most recently dismantling the Rays by a score of 7-2 yesterday.
The ball will be given to Masahiro Tanaka who will be making his second start of the season and his first at Yankee Stadium. Tanaka nullified the Blue Jays in his first start, as he didn’t provide much room for the offense to operate. The Yanks ultimately went on to secure a 4-2 win over the Jays. The Blue Jays are not going to be a threat for the Yankees in the AL East this season. It looks like it will shape up to be a two-team race between the Yankees and Red Sox. Sorry Orioles, the prospects aren’t looking too hot for you. Head below for our free Orioles vs. Yankees pick.
Baltimore Orioles vs. N.Y. Yankees Pick
Andrew Cashner (0-1, 7.20 ERA) vs. Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 1.50 ERA)
Tanaka had a rocky spring training, but when the game meant something, Tanaka was hard to hit. He allowed just 3 hits and 1 run across 6 innings. Not too many runners got on base, as he posted a WHIP of 0.50 and .143 OBA. The Blue Jays are going to slip this season, and the Orioles don’t provide anything to get excited about, either. The O’s have gotten off to a lackluster start of 1-5. They’ve been dismal at the plate with a BA of just .183. Against right-handed pitching, the Orioles are hitting .169. They’ve scored 2 or less runs in five of their last games.
Cashner hasn’t been thriving with his new team, at least in his first start, anyway. He is going to need to have some run support to find wins this season, but it’s going to be tough to come by. Cashner was rocked for 5 runs in 5 innings against the Twins in his first start. The Yankees’ offense has scored 18 runs in their last two games. They’ve also gone 8-2 over the Orioles in their last ten meetings. There isn’t much reason to believe that the O’s won’t struggle again tonight at Yankee Stadium. I recommend taking a look at the Yankees to win by at least 2 runs on Thursday.
