Padres vs. Cardinals MLB Pick – August 22nd

The Dodgers got another dramatic win last night to keep their record pace towards history marching forward. For the second time in as many starts, Pittsburgh ace Gerrit Cole was staked to a large lead, this time three runs, but was once again unable to hold it as the Dodgers scored four times in the seventh on a Curtis Granderson grand slam pushed the Dodgers to a 5-3 lead margin. The loss was particularly devastating to the Pirates who fall seven games out in the National League Central and are all but eliminated…

It also hurt me personally as the seemingly-tidy UNDER 8.5 went quickly up in smoke, as the usually reliable Dodgers pen gave up multiple runs for the second consecutive day. Alas, we will try to get back on the grind tonight and start a fresh winning streak.

There is some nice action to pick from tonight in the NL, highlighted by the Nationals visiting Houston in a potential World Series glimpse, the Rockies trying to stabilize their wild card position with a tough road trip in Kansas City and the Cubs and Reds hooking up in a game with a double-digit over/under (should be a ton of fun).

Today’s MLB Pick:

San Diego Padres +175 at St. Louis Cardinals -185 (Total: 8.5)
Clayton Richard (6-12, 4.84 ERA) vs. Lance Lynn (10-6, 3.05 ERA)

The Cardinals have cooled off from two weeks ago’s epic win streak that vaulted them back into the playoff picture, but they have a great opportunity to get right back on track tonight opening a homestand against one of the worst road teams in baseball. The Padres are just 22-39 away from Petco, while the Redbirds are a tidy 35-27 in St. Louis.

Even better for the Cards is tonight’s pitching matchup. Lance Lynn gets the ball seeking a ninth straight quality start. The Cards have won four of his last five outings and seven of his last nine. He enters with a WHIP of 1.17 and a nice .215 opponent batting average. He isn’t striking out many hitters, but he isn’t letting them on base either.

Richard has been less successful. He enters with an ERA approaching five, and while his last two outings have been very good, the Padres lost six in a row with him on the mound prior. It’s going to be a tough outing for sure on the road against a hot-hitting Cards team. Richard has allowed a .312 batting average against, which is pretty staggering.

I like the value of the Cards winning, but will muscle up on the run line as well at +110

Today’s MLB Pick: ST LOUIS CARDINALS RUNLINE (-1.5) +110
