Padres vs. Diamondbacks Pick – April 25th

I’m not sure it is a sign of anything more, bad outings happen to even the best of pitchers, but yesterday was definitely NOT the night to push my luck with rookie Amir Garrett, as the Brewers touched him up for ten earned runs in four innings, including the ninth and MLB-leading tenth homeruns from Eric Thames. The Brewers might not have the pitching to contend long-term in the NL Central, and it is unlikely Thames can go from Korean League to MVP in his first legit season in the United States in six years, but it is one heckuva fun story so far in 2017.

Elsewhere, the Cubbies continue to batter the ball around the yard like maniacs, scoring another 13 runs yesterday to give them 102 on the season, second-best in the National League, and they now lead the NL Central by a game and a half and have the second-best run differential in the league. It feels like they are getting ready to go on a run, but we shall see if the Pirates and Gerrit Cole can do anything to slow them down tonight in PNC Park.

The highlights of the NL schedule include the aforementioned Hendricks/Cole battle, Game Two of the Nationals and Rockies and the nightcap between the Dodgers and Giants, which WOULD have been Kershaw vs. Bumgarner, but well, yeah…

Today’s MLB Pick:

San Diego Padres +130 at Arizona Diamondbacks -137 (Total: 10)
Clayton Richard (2-2, 3.07 ERA) vs. Patrick Corbin (1-3, 3.27 ERA)

What is not to like about the D’Backs tonight? They have the most prolific offense in the National League with 112 runs scored. They have a good pitcher on the mound in Corbin, whose 1-3 record deserves better, and they are at home where they are off to a franchise-best 9-2 start.

Clayton Richard has been excellent this season as well, but he is saddled with the second-worst offense in the National League and a team with baseball’s worst run differential at -34. The Padres are actually far WORSE than their lousy 8-13 record and are looking at yet another season in the N.L. basement.

If you want to go run line tonight and get greedy, I can’t blame you. The odds are really in the ‘Backs favor tonight; better pitcher, better team, WAY better overall offense. The run total of 10 tells you all you need to know – there are going to be some runs tonight despite a pair of pitchers with ERA’s in the low-threes.  And if we are going to have a shootout, give me the team with the firepower.
