The San Francisco Giants finally got a much needed win yesterday against the Dodgers. It temporarily stopped the bleeding, but I think they are still teams heading in opposite directions. When it is all said and done at the end of the season, the Dodgers are going to be in a much better position. Unfortunately, the Giants win gave us a loss, something that I have become unfamiliar with lately. Nevertheless, I am still up big for the week, and plan on finishing it up the same way we started it.
Free MLB Pick:
San Diego Padres +200 at Washington Nationals -240 (Total: 7.5)
Robbie Erlin (1-1, 4.34 ERA) vs. Stephen Strasburg (4-6, 2.24 ERA)
The Washington Nationals are one of those teams that are difficult to figure out if they are coming or going. I think even the Nationals themselves feel somewhat of in an identity crisis. They have the talent to be so much better, and have the potential to make some serious noise. Speaking of an identity crisis, how about the San Diego Padres? The Padres were actually doing quite well for most of the season. They were playing like a team that didn’t deserve to be the laughing stock of baseball. However, the Padres are slowly losing their momentum and beginning to fade away. They are a team that isn’t excellent offensively, and they also don’t have the pitching staff to carry them very far, so they feed off momentum. And lately, there has been absolutely none, with their last win coming all the way back on June 28th.
One guy that certainly has plenty of momentum is Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg is asserting himself as not just one of the best young pitchers in baseball, but as one of the best period. While the Nationals have been up and down, Strasburg has not. With his 2.24 ERA, he is solid as they come today. Strasburg has been mesmerizing in his last three tilts holding a 1.29 ERA against the Brewers, Diamondbacks, and Rockies. He is also unbeatable at home, where he owns an ERA of 1.17 and WHIP of only 0.87.
His counterpart for the Padres, Robbie Erlin, only wishes he have half as good the stats. Erlin brings an ERA of 4.34 to this game, and has had some atrocious starts on the road this season with a 7.94 in only 5.2 innings pitched. Erlin has actually only pitched 18.1 innings on the season, so there isn’t a big sample size to work with, but what I do know is he is going up against one of the best in the business, Strasburg.
I don’t think the Nationals are going to need to scratch many runs across to come up with a win in this one. Strasburg should be able to hold the Padres to a run or two, with the Nationals coming up with 5 or so. Consequently, I like the Nationals to cover the RL in this ballgame.
