Philadelphia Phillies vs. LA Dodgers Pick – MLB May 15, 2022

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to complete an improbable sweep at Dodger Stadium on Sunday afternoon. They are coming off a 9-7, 12-10, and 8-3 win following a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Philadelphia has won five of their last six attempts going into the series finale on Sunday. After a disappointing start this season, the Phillies are back to .500 on the season. This team is built to score quickly, but it hasn’t come all together for them in the Bryce Harper era.

Is this finally the season where the Phillies live up to live up to expectations? We’ve seen them get hot before and then collapse, so this isn’t the time to have confidence in the Phillies.

The Dodgers haven’t been themselves this past week. Pittsburgh started something at PNC Park. The Pirates beat the Dodgers in two of three games, with a 5-3 victory in the rubber match on Wednesday.

Despite this recent slide, the Dodgers were so hot before getting into trouble that it softened the blow. The Dodgers are 20-12 and in a tie with the San Diego Padres in the NL West. They were coming off a sweep of the Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball before losing to the Bucs.

Credit the Phillies, who have been on fire at the dish. They had a tough matchup against Julio Urias last night, but got to him right away. The Phillies scored on a 3-run bomb to open the game in the 1st and kept it on through the 4th to take an 8-1 lead.

Urias allowed 8 hits and 5 earned runs in a start that wasn’t typical for him. Michael Grove gets the call for the series finale and will make his major league debut. Veteran Aaron Nola counters for the Phillies.

Phillies vs. Dodgers Prediction:

Michael Grove will receive his first start in the major leagues this afternoon at Dodger Stadium. He struggled mightily in Double-A ball last year, but settled in this season.

Grove posted an ERA of 7.86 and a 1.79 WHIP in Double-A. The fact he’s pitching in the majors after a disaster like that in Double-A ball just a year ago is pretty amazing.

In five attempts this season, Grove has recorded an ERA of 2.76 and a 0.98 WHIP. This is a big leap up for him from Double-A and to the major leagues.

He doesn’t have the biggest sample size of success in the minors and is skipping Triple-A to the Show, so this outing could be a wildcard for him. He must deal with the hottest offense in baseball at the moment.

The Phillies are the second-best team in the majors with 5.04 runs per 9 innings and a team batting average of 256.

In their last five outings, the Phillies have netted a .268 average and 7.24 runs per 9 innings. They are hitting .275 with 5.74 runs per 9 innings going back ten games.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. LA Dodgers Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 6-4
  • 4-0 overall in their previous four games
  • 8-0 overall in their previous eight games versus the NL West
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games versus a team with a winning record
  • OVER is 8-0 in their previous eight games versus the NL West
  • OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games versus a left-handed starter

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games versus the NL East
  • OVER is 4-0 in their previous four games on the road at home
  • OVER is 12-3-1 in their previous 16 games after a loss
  • OVER is 6-2-1 in their previous nine games versys a team with a losing record
  • OVER is 17-6-3 in their previous 24 games on a Sunday

  • Managing at the plate on the road hasn’t been a problem for the Phillies. They are hitting .259 with 5.46 runs scored per 9 innings.

Aaron Nola has been fine for the Phillies this year, but has a record of 1-4 and finished with an ERA worse than 4.00 for the first time since 2016 in 2021. Nola enters with a 3.83 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.

Nola is coming off his worst performance of the season. He was touched up for 9 hits and 4 earned runs at Seattle five days ago.

The Dodgers should have some success in this one. Nola has posted an ERA of 4.86 and a 1.44 WHIP in three starts on the road. This Dodgers lineup has scored 13 RBIs against Nola in 148 at-bats.

Freddie Freeman has been his biggest threat, as the former Brave is responsible for 2 home runs and 12 of the 13 RBIs.

I see at least a 5-4 or 6-4 final score at Dodger Stadium Sunday afternoon. The total looks a half run too short in this matchup. The OVER looks like the best play at Dodger Stadium.
