They’ve been able to shake off a slow start and get back to .500, heading into Sunday evening in Queens. The Mets opened this series with a 3-0 win over the Phillies behind a no-hitter from Tylor Megill.
Megill recorded the first no-hitter of the season, as a quality Mets’ starting rotation is off to a fast start in 2022. Max Scherzer will seek to end this series on a high note.
Kyle Gibson fired back on Saturday with a solid showing of his own. Gibson went 4.1 innings with 2 hits and no earned runs allowed. Taijuan Walker was even sharper, as he lasted 5 innings with 2 hits allowed and no runs.
However, Walker didn’t receive much run support, and the bullpen melted down late at Citi Field. The Mets are in a good position despite the loss, though.
They’re going into Sunday Night Baseball with a record of 15-7 and first in the NL East. The Mets have a two-game advantage on the Miami Marlins for the lead in the division.
It’s a tough rotation to deal with against the Mets. Now on the final day of this series, they’re sending out Scherzer on Sunday night. The Phillies are scheduled to counter with Zach Eflin.

Phillies vs. Mets Prediction:
The Mets shouldn’t have to worry about their pitching this season. It’s been going as expected so far. They are second in runs against per game, batting average, OPS, and first in strikeouts.
Opponents are hitting just .194 against the Mets pitchers this season. They own an ERA of 2.79 as a team, only trailing the LA Dodgers in that regard.
Acquiring Scherzer to beef up their rotation was a smart move. Scherzer makes an already strong rotation elite. He’s off to a fast start with his new team.
Scherzer is hot with an ERA of 1.80 and a 0.76 WHIP across four starts. He allowed 3 runs in his first outing of the season, but has been on fire since then.

Going into tonight, Scherzer has posted a 0.95 ERA and 0.79 WHIP through his previous 19 innings on the bump. Expect him to make easy work of a Phillies lineup that hasn’t done well against him in previous starts.
The bullpen for the Mets has been doing their part as well. They didn’t show it last night, but the relievers have been dependable. The Mets’ bullpen has a team ERA of 3.16 with a 1.22 WHIP.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets Betting Trends:
- Record (Last 10): 7-3
- 2-10 overall in their previous 12 games as an underdog
- 4-12 overall in their previous 16 games on the road
- UNDER is 8-2-1 in their previous 11 games versus the NL East
- UNDER is 7-3 in their previous ten games as an underdog on the road
- UNDER is 3-1-1 in their previous five games on a Sunday
- Record (Last 10): 6-4

- UNDER is 5-0-3 in their previous eight games after a loss
- UNDER is 5-1-1 in their previous seven games versus the NL East
- UNDER is 4-1 in their previous five games after a loss
Zach Eflin will be asked to turn in a big performance with Scherzer on the other side. Eflin has been solid with an ERA of 3.20 and a 1.12 WHIP in 21.1 innings on the bump.
Eflin is coming off a standout performance versus the Rockies at home. He was at his best, holding the Rockies to 2 hits and 1 earned run in 10-3 win.
The Mets are fine against Eflin, but nothing special with a .254 batting average in 110 at-bats. That about sums up his seven-year career in the major leagues. Nothing special, though a reliable arm that can give 5 or 6 innings.
The Phillies will likely need Eflin to have another elite performance to beat the Mets tonight. Scherzer isn’t going let Philadelphia off easy in this one.
A low-scoring duel between Eflin and Scherzer looks like it should be in the cards at Citi Field on Sunday evening. A play on the UNDER is probably the best bet for Sunday Night Baseball in Queens.
