The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets headline Sunday Night Baseball tonight. The Mets are looking for the sweep after an 8-6 and 8-2 win at Citi Field. They are in mix with the best teams in baseball.

The Mets are going into tonight at 31-17 and just one fewer win than the LA Dodgers in the National League. They are clear in the NL East with an 8.5-game advantage on the Atlanta Braves. Keep in mind that this is all without Jacob deGrom on the bump.
It wasn’t too long ago when the only thing that the Mets had was deGrom. He needed to pitch scoreless games for the Mets to win games.
While deGrom works himself back into the rotation from an injury, the Mets are swinging the balls like he’s never seen before. DeGrom has never had this luxury of playing on a team that gives him run support.

Note that deGrom is scheduled to return to the mound soon. He feels normal and is just awaiting clearance from the team to get back on the mound. This doesn’t mean that deGrom will be back in the rotation right away, but he’s much closer now.
Scherzer and deGrom aren’t all the Mets have in their pitching staff. Chris Bassitt at his best can be a major contributor as well. He’s coming off some poor outings, though, and is looking to bounce back tonight.
Zack Wheeler is coming off a masterclass performance against the San Diego Padres. He’s entering off back-to-back wins following a 9-7 win over the Dodgers and 3-0 over the Padres.
The former New York Met will look to stay hot versus his former team tonight. Wheeler was not in his best form to open this season, but has since regained his touch as an ace. Bassitt counters for the Mets at Citi Field.

Phillies vs. Mets Prediction:
Zack Wheeler had run into some problems earlier in the season. He still thought it was spring training, because the Wheeler from the last two years wasn’t present. Wheeler allowed 12 earned runs through 12.2 innings in his first three starts.
However, since then, Wheeler has been on fire. He had an 8.53 ERA and 1.66 WHIP following three starts this season. In four attempts since then, he’s brought his ERA down to 3.38 with a 1.15 WHIP.
There aren’t many pitchers that can say they allowed 12 runs in three starts and going into the end of May with a 3.38 ERA. Besides those three woeful starts, Wheeler has looked like himself.
In three of his previous four outings, Wheeler hasn’t allowed a run in 22.2 innings. In his most recent start, he neutralized the Padres with 4 hits and no earned runs conceded in 7 innings.
He doesn’t have much experience against this lineup for the Mets. They are hitting 0.83 versus Wheeler in eight at-bats.

Bassitt is going into Sunday Night Baseball with an ERA of 3.91 and a 1.21 WHIP. He’s not coming off his best work, but could be in for a bounce-back performance tonight.
Bassitt is coming off his worst performance of the season against the Giants. He was tagged for 8 hits and 8 earned runs through 4.1 innings.
However, Bassitt has looked really good at times as well. He’s allowed 1 or no runs in five of his nine outings in 2022. After a horrible performance, look for Bassitt to bounce back at Citi Field.
I’m on the UNDER in what could develop into a duel between Wheeler and Bassitt in Queens.
