Philadelphia Phillies vs. St. Louis Cardinals Pick – MLB July 8, 2022

The Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals open a four-game series on Friday night at Busch Stadium. This is a series that will go past the weekend and conclude on Monday.

The Cardinals avoided getting swept with a gritty 3-2 win on Thursday evening at Truist Park. Atlanta threatened to sweep before Matthew Liberatore, and the Cards’ bullpen closed the door on that idea.

Strider did what he could for the Braves’ four-game sweep bid. He held well through 6 innings with 2 hits and no earned runs allowed.

The pitching staff for the Cardinals had a sharp game, but the support from the offense wasn’t there. The Cardinals moved to 45-40 and 2.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers.

Neither the Brewers or Cardinals give off any indications that their World Series contenders.

The Brewers and Cardinals will have their moments, but they’ll likely have too many moments where they don’t belong in the postseason. One of them is likely going to the postseason, as there is no competition behind them in the NL Central.

Who is going to catch the Brewers and Cards? The next closest club is the Pittsburgh Pirates in third at 34-49. This isn’t the best division in baseball.

The Phillies are fresh off a 5-3 win yesterday afternoon over the Washington Nationals. They won two out of three games at Citizens Bank Park to advance to 44-39 and eight games behind the Mets in the NL East. Bryce Harper will be absent for another series this weekend.

Phillies vs. Cardinals Prediction:

Zack Wheeler has the Friday night assignment for the Phillies at Busch Stadium. Wheeler has been performing his job in the Phillies’ rotation at a high level this season.

The Cy Young finalist enters Busch Stadium with an ERA of 2.66 and a 1.07 WHIP.

He finished with an ERA of 2.78 and a 1.01 WHIP last season, following a 2.92 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in the 60-game schedule. Wheeler didn’t win the Cy Young in 2021, but was in consideration.

Wheeler isn’t a top contender to win the Cy Young, but he’s giving himself enough room to perhaps make a move in the second half.

Wheeler is coming off a standout performance versus the Cardinals. He went 7 innings with 4 hits and no runs allowed in a 4-0 win five days ago.

He’s riding high with a 2.55 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in his previous three starts.

It’s been a while since Wheeler has had a bad start. Since allowing 4 earned runs to the Brewers on April 23, Wheeler hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a work assignment.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. St. Louis Cardinals Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 6-4
  • 8-2 overall in their previous ten first game of a series
  • 17-5 overall in their previous 22 games versus a right-handed starter
  • UNDER is 7-3-1 in their previous 11 games versus the NL Central
  • UNDER is 8-3 in their previous 11 games after scoring 5 or more runs in their previous game

  • UNDER is 6-0 in their previous six games versus a starter with a WHIP better than 1.15
  • UNDER is 5-0 in their previous five games versus a team with a winning record

  • Adam Wainwright should give the Cardinals a solid chance despite Wheeler on the other side. Wainwright isn’t getting younger but still performing at a high level.

The 40-year-old has an ERA of 3.26 and a 1.27 WHIP.

He is at his best at Busch Stadium this season. Through 44 innings, Wheeler has an ERA of 2.25 and a 1.14 WHIP at home.

Both starters in this one have had success against their opponents. They also have a fairly long history vs these lineups as well.

The Cards are hitting .187 against Wheeler in 188 at-bats. Conversely, Wainwright has held the Phillies to a .181 average with no home runs in 82 career at-bats.

This looks like a pitcher’s game between Wheeler and Wainwright in St. Louis tonight. A final score of 4-3 or 4-2 to keep this one UNDER the total looks accurate.
