Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals Pick – MLB June 16, 2022

The Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals are opening a four-game series at Nationals Park on Thursday evening. Washington is looking for much better after getting swept by the Atlanta Braves at home.

In their latest attempt, the Nationals didn’t come close in an 8-2 final at home. Erick Fedde lasted 5.1 innings with 7 hits and 3 earned runs allowed. He did his best to prevent the levy from breaking, but the Braves ultimately broke through.

The Nationals have played six straight games in a row at home, with their seventh during this home stand tonight. They opened things off well with back-to-back wins against the Brewers.

After failing to get the sweep, the Nationals came back in their next series to get swept. They have fallen to 23-42 and 18.5 games out of first place in the NL East. The Mets are currently in control at 41-23, but the Braves are catching up fast.

The Phillies are keeping their heads above water at 32-31. I’d agree if you told me that the Phillies would be a game above .500 at this point in this season. They reached that point impressively in a walk-off against the Marlins.

They’ve won 11 of their previous 13 outings and have had some encouraging moments.

Philadelphia is 8.5 games out of the lead in the NL East. It’s unlikely they’re a threat to the Mets and Braves, but there’s a lot of time left this season, and they will probably do a good job of providing their fans with false hope.

Fighting for a wildcard looks like an accurate outlook for the Phillies. The talent is there in their lineup, but we’ve been saying this for a while now. What they can do with it is another story.

The Phillies will send ace Zack Wheeler to the bump to toe the rubber. Patrick Corbin has the greenlight for the Nats. Head below for our free Phillies vs. Nationals prediction on June 16, 2022.

Phillies vs. Nationals Prediction:

The Phillies should be able to pick on Patrick Corbin in this one. It’s been a hard crash for Corbin since 2019. He had a career-high ERA of 3.15 in 2018 and followed up with another solid campaign at a 3.25 ERA.

Corbin has been unable to find that same form since then. His first sign of trouble was during the 60-game season. Through 11 starts, Corbin posted an ERA of 4.66 and a 1.57 WHIP.

He’s been able to get back on track since failing to get into a groove in the shortened campaign.

Corbin was looking to prove it was a fluke during the Covid-19 season, but he didn’t do any better in 31 starts. It was tough for him, as Corbin finished with a 5.82 ERA and 1.47 WHIP.

The rest of the season is critically important for Corbin. He has to get hot or risk losing his starting role in the major leagues.

Corbin enters this one with an ERA of 6.65 and a 1.73 WHIP in 66.1 innings. He’s yielded a 7.71 ERA and 1.96 WHIP in his previous three starts.

In this time, opponents have notched a .400 OBP against Corbin through 17 innings.

The Phillies have throttled Corbin in previous matchups. They’re hitting .377 with a .422 OBP in 185 at-bats.

This includes 6 home runs and 28 RBIs for terrific success against Corbin. It also includes a nice big sample size of action.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals Betting Trends:

Phillies

  • Record (Last 10): 8-2
  • 9-2 overall in their previous 11 games as a betting favorite
  • 4-0 overall in their previous four first game of a series
  • 7-0 overall in their previous seven games after their opponent conceded 5 or more runs
  • 8-0 overall in their previous eight games versus the Nationals
  • OVER is 12-2 in their previous 14 games

Nationals

  • Record (Last 10): 3-7
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games after scoring 2 or fewer runs
  • 12-42 overall in their previous 54 games as an underdog at home
  • 8-22 overall in their previous 30 first game of a series
  • 2-7 overall in their previous nine games versus the National League
  • 0-9 overall in their previous nine games versus the NL East

  • The Phillies are a top-5 unit in the majors with 4.88 runs per 9 innings and a team batting average of .252. Their power numbers have been amongst the best, with 1.30 home runs per game.

An inconsistent pitching staff has hurt the Phillies.

That isn’t a Zack Wheeler problem, though. Wheeler is in good shape, with a 2.84 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 64 innings. In his last three outings, he’s notched a 1.50 ERA and 0.94 WHIP.

Wheeler has held up pretty well against the Nats in his career. They are hitting .200 with 5 home runs in 153 at-bats.

Corbin has contributed to one of the worst pitching staff in the majors. However, it isn’t just him in Washington adding to the poor numbers. The bullpen is near the back of the majors with a 4.59 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.

The Phillies by 2 or more runs looks about right in the series opener at Nationals Park tonight. Expect the slide to continue for the Nationals.
