The Philadelphia Phillies jumped out early with 5 runs across the 2nd and 3rd inning over the Mets last night. They took a 5-1 lead, which is a 10-run deficit for most teams. The Mets’ offense isn’t exactly built to pile on runs and stage comebacks, even though it’s only 4 runs. That lead ballooned up to 7-1. The Phillies are in a heated battle with the Braves for the top spot in the NL East.
The division hasn’t exactly going how it was written up at the start of the season, but the Phillies and Braves are fine with that. The Nationals are heading into the All-Star break befuddled, while the Phils and Braves have stepped up. Philadelphia advanced to 51-39 with the victory. The Mets win games based on their pitching. They have a couple of good curlers, one of which is getting the nod on Wednesday.
Jacob deGrom would be a gem for a team looking for rotation help, but there haven’t been any indications that the Mets are ready to say goodbye. I wouldn’t blame the Mets for that. If they can fix their issues on offense, they’re going to have a team that is going back to the postseason. If there is any guy that the Mets would like to move, it has to be Syndergaard. However, other teams are going to be gun shy with Syndergaard because of his injury concerns. DeGrom, Syndergaard, and Wheeler provide a terrific punch in the rotation when they’re all healthy. The Phillies will counter with Vince Velasquez. Get our free Phillies vs. Mets pick below.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. N.Y. Mets Pick
Vince Velasquez (5-7, 4.70 ERA) vs. Jacob deGrom (5-4, 1.79 ERA)
The Mets have undoubtedly gotten fielded some phone calls regarding the status of deGrom. Unless a team wants to unload a few of their top prospects, the Mets are not going to budge. DeGrom has an inside track to the Cy Young with his stellar ERA of 1.79. At 30 years old, deGrom is at the pinnacle of his career, though.
This is likely going to be the best trading opportunity the Mets are going to have for him. Someone out there would give up a lot if it means deGrom equals a World Series in 2018. Like I previously said, though, the Mets just need to acquire some bats and they have a deadly team with that rotation. It’s a shame that deGrom only has a record of 5-4 with an ERA of 1.79. That just goes to show you the lack of run support he’s had to deal with.
Philadelphia is hitting .210 against deGrom with no home runs in 81 at-bats. It’s impressive to hold a team with 81 appearances at the plate without a single dinger. Vince Velasquez may need to get into a duel with deGrom here to find a win. 3 or 4 could be enough to win this matchup, so I foresee it being tight to the finish.
Velasquez was mauled against the Brewers about a month ago, as he allowed 10 runs in 3.2 innings. That shot his ERA all the way up, but overall, Velasquez has been pitching well. He has allowed 2 or less runs in 7 of his last 10 outings. In his last five starts on the road, Velasquez has shut down the Rays, Nationals, Cardinals, Dodgers, and Giants. He didn’t allow more than 2 runs in any start. His numbers on the road have been solid, with an ERA of 2.48 with a 1.19 WHIP. I like the thought of a low-scoring duel between Velasquez and deGrom on Wednesday evening at Citi Field.
