Phillies vs. Rangers Pick – MLB May 18th

The weather is getting hotter across the country, and with that, the Texas Rangers are heating up, too. The Rangers will go for their ninth win in a row, after making quick work of the competition in their previous eight games. They enter with a record of 21-20, and erased their early struggles, bringing their record above .500. Even with this heavy winning streak, the Rangers still have some catching up to do. But it just shows you how streaky baseball can be.

The Rangers are a ways back of the Astros who seem to be running away with the division. However, we’re not even out of May yet, so there is plenty of time to make up ground. It’s going to be rather difficult though, considering how well the Astros have been playing. The Rangers meet the Phillies this afternoon for game-three, which has favored Texas considerably.

They have wins of 9-3 and 5-1 over the hopeless Phillies. The Phillies have been trying to etch out some success for years now but it’s undoubtedly been a rebuilding process for them for too long now. They’ll look to take a win and get to 15-23 with a win. Philadelphia Phillies vs. Texas Rangers Pick

Nick Pivetta (0-2, 6.14 ERA) vs. Martin Perez (1-5, 3.89 ERA)

No disrespect to Nick Pivetta but he’s an example of why the Phillies have been struggling. They’ve had problems finding pitching and it seems to be the same old story in 2017. Note that they haven’t been the most fortunate injury wise, either. In any event, the Phillies haven’t been relevant since Roy Halladay was on the team. They spent a ton of money bolstering up their rotation in that era, but haven’t done much of late. Pivetta has just 14.2 innings of work, but his ERA is already sky high, as well as his WHIP which is 1.90. In other words, he’s spotting nearly 2 runners on base per game approximately.

Perez has to be feeling lucky his ERA isn’t higher. Note that he sports a WHIP of 1.70, which would suggest he has gotten out of trouble quite a bit. We’ll just say that he’s made it interesting on the mound this season. The Rangers haven’t scored less than 4 runs per game during their eight-game win streak. Conversely, Phili have allowed 20 runs in their last three games. Let’s get on the OVER in Arlington on Thursday.

PICK: OVER 10 (-105)
