Phillies vs Red Sox Pick MLB – May 28th + Bonus Picks

We split our Memorial Day MLB pick, with the Dodgers pulling out a late win over the Angels to snap their eight-game winning streak and give us a loss, but went comfortably over the run total (actually doubled it) in the process to even the daily mark.

Today we will try to find a few winners with a look at a few fun interleague rivalry matchups.

Today’s Free MLB Picks:

Philadelphia Phillies +118 at Boston Red Sox -122 (Total: 8)

Cliff Lee (5-2, 2.48 ERA) vs. Ryan Dempster (2-5, 4.69 ERA)

The first thing that jumps up and SCREAMS at me with this line is that I have to give money if I want Ryan Dempster and his 1.40 WHIP against Cliff Lee??  That seems a bit odd to me.  Lee has been excellent of late, winning two of his last three starts (A ND in the other) positing a 0.91 ERA with a WHIP of 0.78.  He’s gone 23 innings in the process, eliminating the pressure on the Philllies suspect bullpen which has posted an ERA near four and a half this season.

Meanwhile, Dempster’s rocky introduction to the American League shows no signs of slowing.  Perhaps it is simply a function of the fact he was a pretty average pitcher for MOST of his career before a sterling 2011 for the Cubs made him a highly-valued trade commodity at the deadline.  His last three outings have been simply abominable, going 0-2 and lasting a total of 12 innings with an ERA of 10.66 and a ridiculous WHIP of 2.40.

Yes, Dempster is at home tonight and YES, the Red Sox lineup is far superior to that of Philadelphia, but if I get Cliff Lee facing off against Ryan Dempster AND +118, I’ll take it.

Free Pick:  Philadelphia Phillies to WIN +118

Pittsburgh Pirates +144 at Detroit Tigers -152 (Total: 9.5)

Jeanmar Gomez (2-0, 2.75 ERA) vs. Ricky Porcello (2-2, 6.28 ERA)

The Pirates are huge underdogs tonight even though they have the statistical starting pitching advantage.  I’m not sure I’d go all in with this wager, but I do like them as a good value wager tonight.  My favorite pick on this game is UNDER the 9.5 run total.

I think Gomez will do a decent job of holding the Tigers lineup to a reasonable output.  He has been excellent in his five starts and the Pirates have won all five games he has pitched this year.  Meanwhile, Porcello has had a rough start to the season, but has looked better in his last three outings.  Pittsburgh’s strength as a team is their solid starting pitching and their excellent bullpen.  I think they’ll keep this game in a reasonably low scoring range.
