Pirates vs. Braves Pick MLB – June 3rd

Frustrating loss yesterday to finish the week, as we had the over in the Tigers/O’s game. Both teams had 10 hits each, but unfortunately many of those 20 hits were singles. When there were runners waiting to be cashed in on 3rd and 2nd batters either popped or grounded out. Even the best are susceptible to a bad day, though, as Miguel Cabrera grounded into two double plays to doom our wager.

I ended up making a play on the Rockies team total OVER after discovering the Dodgers needed to make a pitching change before the contest began. So, I ended up with a split on the day to cap off a weekend in the plus. Monday has a small card to offer, but let’s try and make some cash off of it with a pick. I’ll be back tomorrow with my regular pick, and a bonus pick as well.

Free MLB Pick:

Pittsburgh Pirates +125 at Atlanta Braves -145 (Total: 7)

A.J. Burnett (3-5, 2.72 ERA) vs. Kris Medlen (1-6, 3.48 ERA)

This game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves features the professor vs. the student in a sense. Pirates’ pitcher A.J. Burnett is no stranger to pitching in MLB by now. In his 15th season, Burnett is having one of his most successful careers as a pro. His years with the Yankees were shaky to say the least, but it appears he has found a good place to spend his remaining years in baseball.

The Atlanta Braves will counter with the young Kris Medlen. Medlen came into focus last season after he put together an impressive first season. He finished with a whopping ERA of only 1.57 to go along with 120 K’s and a 10-1 record. It hasn’t been a fluid transition for Medlen heading into his sophomore year, seeing his ERA rise to 3.48. Nevertheless, the kid has plenty of talent, and can play shutdown baseball on any given night. Medlen pitches much better in his own ballpark than on the road, where his ERA currently stands at 2.89 at home. Against a team in the Pirates that have been struggling offensively for the most part, I believe Medlen has a good chance at having a quality start tonight.

The most impressive facet of Burnett’s season is his strikeout numbers. He has been an absolute machine, mowing down 89 batters, good for 4th best in the majors. The Braves are a team that is all too familiar with whiffing on pitches. In fact, the Braves have three players that are in the top 10 in strikeouts in 2013, Dan Uggla (70), and both the Upton brothers (65). No, that is not a typo, both brothers have identical strikeouts and play for the same team. Burnett should be able to take advantage of a team that likes to come up empty on big rips at the plate.

Four out of Medlen’s last five starts at home have fallen under the number, and Burnett is pulling his weight as well, with seven out of his last nine going under 7 runs. This should all add up to a pitching showcase in Atlanta.
