The Rockies got to Zack Greinke plenty and the score got way out of hand early in an eventual 9-8 Dodgers victory. You never like to lose a pick, but at least we didn’t sit on the edge of our seats hoping for the UNDER. That ship sailed pretty early. Let’s see if we can do a little better tonight and get a win to jump start the week.
It’s going to be a fun week with the NHL Stanley Cup Finals commencing tonight and the long (very long) awaited NBA Finals tomorrow. I’ll be back with an extensive Finals Preview and a look at each team, the matchups and the metrics behind the matchups tomorrow. But for one more day it is nothing but baseball, so let’s enjoy the day on the diamond and make the most of an advantageous line.

Today’s Free Pick:
Pittsburgh Pirates -125 at San Francisco Giants +125 (Total: 7)
Francisco Liriano vs. Tim Hudson
It’s been a renaissance year for fellow veteran and one time dominant staff member Tim Lincecum. The Giants are hoping for the same spark to ignite Tim Hudson, but so far to this point in 2015 it has not. Huddy has been decent at 3-4 with a 4.62 ERA and he has averaged over six innings an outing over his ten starts (the Giants are 5-5 in those ten starts) so he has been everything you really could ask for out of an number four or five starter – just not the Tim Hudson of old.
The same can be said of Liriano for the Pirates, though age isn’t the same issue. The lefty has been good by all numbers other than wins and losses. A 3.47 ERA should earn you a little better lot than 2-4, ditto for his very respectable 1.08 WHIP. The stunning stat, is that despite receiving an average of 4.2 runs of support, the Pirates are a dreadful 2-8 with Liriano on the hill. The “stopper” in recent years has been stopped 80% of his time so far this year.
That makes getting plus money and the streaking Giants at home this afternoon an intruiging value proposition. Both teams have some positive trends going for them; the Pirates have won eight straight games as the favorite. The G-Men are 7-1 in their last eight as a dog. The Pirates are loking for the sweep today, but I think the Giant bats will support Huddy. They are hitting .279 as a team against left handed pitching, so I look for them to get a few runs off of Liriano – not a ton – but just enough to see his good pitching/bad result tough luck continue.
