While I have captured a few no doubt winners recently, last night was a no doubter of the other variety. The Kansas City Royals dismantled the Baltimore Orioles in convincing fashion, earning a 7-1 victory to take their third straight from them. The Royals looked like the team primed for a big playoff run, not the Orioles. Nevertheless, it still has been a productive week, as that was our first loss and we are at Friday already. I’m hoping for big things in the last weekend of July. Let’s kick things off with a familiar team to me lately, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Free MLB Pick:
Pittsburgh Pirates -155 at Miami Marlins +135 (Total: 7.5)
Jeff Locke (9-2, 2.11 ERA) vs. Henderson Alvarez (0-1, 3.28 ERA)
I mentioned above that the Pirates are team that is familiar to me lately, and that is because I have made a bunch of money laying it down on this crew in many capacities. Whether it be hitting them on the ML, or taking advantage of their impressive rotation and bullpen on under wagers, the Pirates have been kind to me. So, why not turn to the Pirates once again. If you have been paying attention, I have been on plenty of Jeff Locke starts, which for the lack of a better word have been locks.
Locke has been one of the best, unnoticed pitchers in baseball at the moment. He did get the nod to go to the All-Star game, but didn’t pitch due to a minor injury that was bothering him. Locke has been so good that he hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a game since two out of the first three games of the season! An incredible stat to digest. While Locke’s ERA of 2.11 is fantastic, he is even better on the road, where he a 1.73 ERA and only given up 1 home run. Locke also possesses an excellent WHIP of 1.03 outside of Pittsburgh. He should find things easy against a Marlins team that struggles to put up any runs. Even their own players are making fun of themselves on Twitter.
Henderson Alvarez will get the nod for the Marlins to try and keep up with Locke. The former Blue Jay hasn’t been in the starting rotation for long, but he has taken advantage of the opportunity presented to him. He holds a steady ERA of 3.28, and has done quite well in his last three starts with a 2.75 ERA. Alvarez’s last start being the most impressive, where he didn’t give up a single run against the Milwaukee Brewers in 7 innings of work.
I think it’s going to be another repeat of the Jeff Locke show tonight. There is absolutely no reason to think he won’t shut down the abysmal Marlins’ offense. It also helps when you are backed by one of the best, if not the best, bullpens in baseball. Alvarez, however, should do fine against a pretty porous offense as well. It looks like the Pirates will win this one, but the UNDER 7.5 is screaming my name.
Free Pick: UNDER 7.5
