It’s an all interleague day for MLB, and there are a few intriguing matchups worth tuning in to. Baltimore takes a 9-1 streak into Philly looking to help pile on the Phils misery and continue their own climb back into the crowded AL East. Meanwhile the Cardinals look to avoid dropping to 0-2 since being the first professional sports team accused of corporate espionage…
In evening action, Justin Verlander looks to make his second start of the season better than his first in Cincinnati, the Pirates look to win their eighth straight game against the White Sox in Chicago and the Rangers look to notch a win against the always-tough Zack Greinke.
It should be a good day and night of unique MLB matchups – and no better night than tonight to snap a scuffling losing streak and start on a winning path. So let’s dive in to today’s free pick and see if we can begin to reverse our recent (mis)fortune….

Today’s Free Pick:
Pittsburgh Pirates -133 at Chicago White Sox +123 (Total: 7.5)
Gerrit Cole vs. Jeff Samardzjia
Bet against Gerrit Cole at your own peril. The young ace has been electric this season, posting a 10-2 record and a dazzling 1.76 ERA. He is making a strong case to start the All-Star Game for the National League (hope he fares well against the Royals…) and has been fantastic of late, going 5-0 with a 0.76 ERA in his last five starts. He is seeking his sixth straight win tonight against an offense that has mustered two runs in their three games this series against Pittsburgh.
Opposing him is Jeff Samardzijia, who is still trying to find his footing since moving to the South Side of the city he pitched so well in for so long. It’s been a rough year for Jeff, with an ERA close to five and a lot of expectations failing to be lived up to so far. He hasn’t won in his last four starts, posting an 0-2 record with a 6.15 ERA. I hate to over-simplify things or put another glorious streak in jeopardy of some bad luck, but this doesn’t seem like the night the Pirates winning ways are put on pause.
It’s hard to win if you don’t score, and Cole hasn’t let many folks do that lately. He has been unhittable and the ChiSox have been un-hitting. This seems like a pretty good spot to eat a small amount of juice and back the favorite at a pretty reasonable price.
