Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies Pick – MLB July 16, 2022

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies meet for the second of three games at Coors Field. The Rockies are coming off a blowout by a final score of 13-2. Brendan Rogers had a big night, with 2 hits and 4 RBIs. Catcher Elias Diaz also had a nice performance in the double-digit win.

The Rockies have been playing competent baseball recently, but this is to be expected with them and the Diamondbacks. In this respect, they’ll have their moments, but can’t consistently put enough long runs together. Don’t be surprised if the Rockies regress and go cold again.

QUINTANA ROCKED
The lefty never looked right from the start, as he was tagged for 7 hits and 6 earned runs in 5 innings. He’s pitched well against the Rockies in past outings, but that didn’t go well.

German Marquez had been struggling, so credit to him for standing tall at Coors Field and reversing his recent fortune. With the win, the Rockies are 42-49 going into Saturday afternoon. Competing with the top of the NL West isn’t possible, but they’re showing life with five wins in six games.

The Rockies were coming off three straight wins over the Padres before another win against the Bucs.

They are swinging a confident bat right now, and against a team like the Pirates, the Rockies are capable of sweeping this series. Pittsburgh is looking to end a three-game skid on Saturday.

The Pirates looked good with two of three wins over the Brewers and then opened against the Marlins with a win. Since that victory, they’ve lost three in a row and fell to 38-53 on the season.

Despite a record of 38-53, this is the third-best record in the NL Central. The Bucs are 12 games behind the Brewers for leading claims. It’s all Cards and Brewers, with St. Louis two games behind.

Pirates vs. Rockies Prediction:

Mitch Keller will look to put something better together after failing to get on track recently. Keller enters Coors Field with an ERA of 5.21 and a 1.55 WHIP in 76 innings of work. Too many runners have reached base against him, as Keller owns a .361 OBA.

Some of his worst work has occurred recently, with Keller posting a 7.20 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in his previous three attempts.

His command issues and avoiding baserunners were on full display during that stretch. Keller posted a .435 OBP, with the Rays, Nationals, and Yankees giving up problems.

UNLIKELY TO RESPOND WELL AT COORS FIELD
Keller has not handled road starts well this season. He goes into this one with an ERA of 5.80 and a 1.68 WHIP on the road.

This isn’t an ideal matchup for Keller, either. The Rockies have scored 8 RBIs with a .324 OBP versus Keller in 35 at-bats.

The Rockies are swinging a hot bat recently and even did well vs a pitcher they don’t usually have success against last night.

Colorado has been on fire at Coors Field this season. They are hitting .280 with 6.18 runs scored per 9 innings. There isn’t another offense at home that hits as well as the Rockies.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies Betting Trends:

Pirates

  • Record (Last 10): 4-6
  • 3-9 overall in their previous 12 second game of a series
  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games versus the Rockies
  • 2-5 overall in their previous seven games versus a right-handed starter
  • 19-42 overall in their previous 61 games on the road versus a team with a losing record
  • OVER is 37-17-6 in their previous 60 games on a Saturday

Rockies

  • Record (Last 10): 6-4
  • 5-1 overall in their previous six games at home
  • 5-1 overall in their previous six games versus a team with a losing record
  • OVER is 9-3-1 in their previous 13 games at home versus a team with a losing record
  • OVER is 9-2 in their previous 11 games as a betting favorite
  • OVER is 5-2-2 in their previous nine games at home

  • The Rockies have scored 6.64 runs per 9 innings and a .282 average in their previous five outings. Expect them to get to Keller and then a shaky Pittsburgh bullpen.

Jose Urena will have his second start as a Rockie after coming over from the Brewers.

Urena posted an ERA of 3.52 in four starts with the Brewers in April. He worked back from an injury and made his debut with a strong performance versus the Dodgers, allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run.

The 30-year-old will make his first start at Coors Field with his new team this afternoon. He’s been good this season, with a 2.66 ERA, though allowing too many runners to reach base will catch up to him at Coors Field. Urena has a 1.48 WHIP, with walking batters a primary issue for him.

Look for a high-scoring matchup at Coors Field. The final score should eclipse the total in Denver again on Saturday.
