Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers Pick – MLB April 19, 2022

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers are at American Family Field for the second meeting of a three-game series in Milwaukee. The Brewers are coming off a 6-1 win over the Pirates last night.

They rode the hot hand of Eric Lauer to a 5-run win. Lauer went 6 innings with 5 hits, and 1 earned run allowed. He was in fine form, while the Pirates’ Zach Thompson pitched 4 innings with 6 hits and 6 earned runs.

The damage was done, with the Brewers scoring enough against Thompson to clear for an easy win at home. The Brew Crew scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th to put the Pirates away early.

After two losses against the St. Louis Cardinals, they’ve won two in a row. The Brewers have been hot and cold to open the season, with three straight wins, then two losses, and now they’ve put together consecutive wins again.

The Brewers will look for three in a row with their ace on the bump. Corbin Burnes will receive his third start of the season. He’s off to a quick start and coming off an elite performance over the Baltimore Orioles.

Milwaukee edged ahead for a 4-2 win in that one with Burnes on the bump. The Pirates are expected to start J.T. Brubaker at American Family Field tonight.

The Bucs are coming off a 6-1 loss, but have been playing decent baseball. The Pirates have won four of their last six outings despite the loss. Any progress is positive for a team that went 61-101 in 2021.

Pirates vs. Brewers Prediction:

The Pirates are opting to send J.T. Brubaker to the hill in this one. That certainly isn’t music to the ears of Pirates fans.

He’s looking for a breakout campaign after failing to be a major contributor in the rotation in the first two years of his career.

Brubaker has to put something together soon, or the Pirates are going to forget about him soon. They are patient and fingers crossed that 2022 is the season he comes out of his shell.

As a rookie in 2020, Brubaker laid down the foundation with a 4.94 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. He was expected to show improvement the following season, but that was not what happened.

Brubaker posted an ERA of 5.36 and a 1.29 WHIP. It’s early in 2022, but this wasn’t what Brubaker was anticipating.

He enters tonight with a 9.82 ERA and 2.18 WHIP across 8 innings of work. Brubaker allowed 8 earned runs against the Cardinals and Nationals.

The Brewers have had success against Brubaker in previous meetings. They are hitting .283 with 10 RBIs against Brubaker in 53 at-bats.

  • 20-50 overall in their previous 70 games versus the NL Central

  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games as a betting favorite
  • 54-24 overall in their previous 78 games after a win
  • UNDER is 6-1-1 in their previous eight games after a win

Brubaker needs to be more efficient tonight if he’s going to keep pace with Corbin Burnes. The Brewers hold a sizable advantage on the mound Tuesday night.

Burnes was in Cy Young form last year, as he finished with an ERA of 2.43 and a 0.94 WHIP. In three of four campaigns in his career, Burnes has ended the regular season with an ERA below 3.00.

He’s right on track again, as Burnes goes into tonight with a 2.25 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in two attempts. Against the O’s in his most recent start, Burnes pitched 7 innings of scoreless baseball with just 3 hits conceded.

The Bucs are hitting .128 with a .143 OBP against Burnes. They’ve tagged Burnes for only one home run during that time. This looks like a spot for the Brewers to win their third straight. Burnes is too much for Brubaker on Tuesday night.
