Texas Rangers +145 @ Detroit Tigers -160 (Total: 7)
Neftali Feliz vs. Justin Verlander
It’s going to be a one heck of a treat tonight watching the reigning Cy Young and MVP of the American League face the red-hot two-time reigning American League Champs. The Texas Rangers are hitting a staggering .301 as a team. There are four teams in the league that don’t have a single PLAYER hitting over .301. The Rangers are doing it as a total team. It isn’t long-term sustainable of course, but it is a fairly accurate glimpse of the dominant potential of the Ranger bats.
The key to both teams early success has been their ridiculous offensive outputs, but the pitching has been solid as well. The Tigers have a steady 3.74 ERA as a team, and have gotten good pitching from Porcello and Fister in addition to the obvious contribution from Verlander. However, the Rangers pitching has been ridiculous. Their staff ERA is 2.37, lowest in the league, and seems to only be getting better. They added Yu Darvish, and have tremendous youth in their talented rotation. Today’s starter, Neftali Feliz is only 25 years old, and has burst on the scene this season with a 2.25 ERA and a WHIP of just 1.08.
My point is, yes Verlander is awesome, but I don’t think he will blank out the Rangers’ bats all day long. I still expect them to scratch out three or four runs today. And these days, three or four runs has been plenty for Texas. Their starters have been great with a 2.37 ERA and the relievers are right with them at 2.43. Does Detroit have an edge tonight with Verlander on the hill? Of course. However, my mission in this column and my role as a Sherpa for your baseball wagering is to find good opportunities for potential value lines. ANY TIME you can get Texas at +150-ish; jump on it. They are just too good to pass up opportunities to get them at a discount.
A quick note of CAUTION for my dear readers and friends: the Tigers and Rangers are playing a double header today to make up for yesterday’s rainout. The game we are discussing is the SECOND game tonight (7:05 EST). Make sure you pay attention to the pitching matchups before making any of your selections tonight.
My pick is Texas. I just like the absolute scorching momentum of their offense getting just enough off Verlander to edge out a win in a game you don’t want to miss if you are a baseball fan.
