The battle of Texas continues on Friday following a 4-2 win for the Astros win yesterday. It’s a classic win for the Astros, as they put the Rangers into a submission hold with their pitching. They’ve had offense, but a game like last night is what you usually get from the Astros. Without their pitching, they are an average to below average team.
They may have lost Dallas Keuchel and Charlie Morton in the off-season, but others are making up for their loss rather easily. Where they may be missed is in the playoffs, though. The Astros called their bluff with Keuchel and were not willing to open up their wallet to his liking. Keuchel is still looking for a team desperate enough to pay him.
Sort of the same situation with Morton, but the Tampa Bay Rays were happy to welcome him. They certainly looked at Justin Verlander and believed they should be getting paid by the Astros as well. Houston hopes that Verlander will earn his pay this evening, as he looks to improve on a rather strong start for JV. It doesn’t seem like the guy ages.
He depends on his fastball with movement and Verlander still has a nice release after all of these years. After winning the World Series, signing Verlander was worth every penny.
He will take on fellow veteran Lance Lynn. Verlander went from his original MLB team and didn’t miss a beat from the Tigers to the ‘Stros. Conversely, Lynn lost all of his confidence when he left St. Louis.
He might be good for a quality outing occasionally, but it’s not good enough here and there. Head below for our free Rangers vs Astros pick.

The Rangers were hoping that Lynn could reignite his career in Arlington following a bad stint with the Twins. The Twins acquired Lynn with the thought that he could put them over the top to overtake the Indians. No, clearly that didn’t happen and the Twins are a better team without Lynn there. The Rangers aren’t getting what they were hoping for, as Lynn enters this contest with an ERA of 5.75. He was fine to start 2019 but has been erratic since. Lynn owns an ERA of 7.71 and 1.96 WHIP in his previous three sessions. Against Verlander, I see it being tough for Lynn to keep up with JV.
Lynn will have to deal with a Verlander who owns an ERA of 2.57 at home in Houston. The Red Sox were the only team to bother Verlander and the Rangers are not the Rangers. Texas has an okay offense, though don’t expect the Rangers to give him many issues. He allowed just 3 hits and 1 run across 7 innings of work in his last outing against the Rangers. Expect another dominant performance by JV as the Astros beat the Rangers by 2 or more runs again on Friday to get the weekend started.
