We endured our first losing day since June 2nd on Sunday, as I went 0-2 for the first time in a while. The last day I went 0-2 with baseball picks was back in April, so nothing to be ashamed about. If you do this long enough, it’s pretty well impossible not to have a losing day. Anyway, moving on to Monday, where we seek to start the new week with a winning MLB pick in Kansas City.
The Royals are just trying to stay out of the bottom of the basement with the Chicago White Sox. With another loss last night, the Royals dropped to 22-49 and are now 15.5 games back of the 1st place Indians, and 2.5 behind the White Sox. Even in this pathetic division known as the American League Central, the Royals are getting lapped several times over.
Following a home sweep by the Astros, the Royals will welcome the Texas Rangers to town. The Royals are currently in a six-game losing streak. They’ve also lost 13 of their previous 14 games. Ouch. Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez are still wearing the Royals uniform, but this team is a whole lot different than the day they won a World Series in 2015.
The bad news is that baseball can change that quickly. And the good news is exactly the same, the Royals can quickly get back into contention in the next few years. However, considering they are going to be sellers at the deadline, I’m thinking it could be more than a few years. With Perez on the chopping block, they’re looking to blow things up. Bartolo Colon is coming in struggling for the Rangers, so we’ll see if the Royals can take advantage. Get our free Rangers vs. Royals pick below.
Texas Rangers vs. K.C. Royals Pick
Bartolo Colon (3-4, 4.94 ERA) vs. Ian Kennedy (1-6, 5.13 ERA)
The Rangers were in a wild one on Sunday, as they staged a 9th inning comeback, blowing the Rockies’ bullpen up for 4 runs. That’s a hard one to swallow if you’re the Rockies. For the Rangers, it was something to feel good about after losing eight in a row before Saturday. At 29-44, don’t expect this win to mean much at the end of the season, though. Colon got off to a nice start in 2018, but the wheels are beginning to fall off. Maybe finally for good this time? He’s the pitcher that just won’t die.
Colon has gotten beamed for an ERA of 12.71 in his last three games. That isn’t a typo, the 12.71 is correct. Further, his WHIP was horrendous at 2.38, along with a .450 OBA. In three of his last five outings, Colon has gotten hit for at least 6 runs. Two of those three came on the road, against the Angels and Dodgers. This current group of Royals have hit Colon at a clip of .313 in 67 at-bats.
His opponent this evening, Ian Kennedy, hasn’t been great either in 2018. However, he’s allowed just 1 run in his last two outings, which spans across 13 innings of work. Additionally, the Rangers, for whatever reason, cannot hit Kennedy for anything. In 110 at-bats, the Rangers have hit Kennedy for a .182 batting average, with just 1 deep ball. Adrian Beltre is the only guy with more than 10 at-bats that has at least a .250 average on him. The Royals have to win eventually. They aren’t a good team, but neither are the Rangers despite their two wins in Colorado. This looks like a spot where the Royals should be able to earn their second win in their last fifteen contests.
