The MLB is set up with another great day of baseball on Thursday. Nine games will be up on the board throughout July 22. One of these matchups will be between the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers. These two teams have struggled throughout this season, but will look for a big win in this one. This game will throw the first pitch at around 1:00 PM Eastern time.
Texas has earned a record of 35-61 throughout this season, which has them sitting in last place of the AL West. The Rangers have lost eight games in a row entering this one and will look for a way to get back on track. Texas has not been able to do much so far this season. The Rangers will look to try and avoid another loss though on Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers have put up a record of 46-51 so far this season, which has them in third place of the AL Central. Detroit is only nine games out of a wild card spot after a strong recent push. The Tigers have won six games in a row entering this one. Detroit will look to put up another strong performance to close out this series.
These two teams have not been great throughout this season, but Detroit has been much better so far this season. The Tigers have been on a big winning streak and will look for their second straight sweep on Thursday afternoon. Texas will look to finally end this losing skid with a good performance on July 22. I expect an exciting close to this series.
The Rangers and the Tigers have met up six times so far this season. Texas hosted the first three games between July 5 and 7. Zack Short homered in the first meeting as the Tigers earned a 7-3 win. John Hicks, Brock Holt and Adolis Garcia all hit home runs to give the Rangers a 10-5 win in the second matchup. Robbie Grossman had two RBI’s in the third game to lead Detroit to a 5-3 win on the road.
The next three games shifted to Detroit between July 19 and 21. Miguel Cabrera had five RBI’s in the first game as the Tigers earned a dominant 14-0 win in the fourth matchup. Robbie Grossman and Eric Haase both had solo shots in the fifth game to give Detroit a 4-1 win. Akil Baddoo, Zack Short and Grossman all hit home runs in the most recent meeting as the Tigers earned a 4-2 win.
Detroit has dominated the season series against the Rangers. The Tigers have won five of the six games against Texas and will look to add a win to that total in this game. Detroit has dominated this series from the start and has yet to spend anytime down on the scoreboard. The Rangers will need to put together a much stronger start on Thursday if they want to avoid the sweep and their ninth straight loss.
Texas has struggled with the bats in their hands so far this season. The Rangers have earned 357 RBI’s, which is 27th in the MLB. Texas has also gone deep 108 times on the season, which is 20th in the league. The Rangers have not been much better on defense. Texas has given up 475 runs to opposing teams, which is 23rd in the MLB.
The Tigers have been solid at bat throughout this season. Detroit has hit in 401 RBI’s so far this season, which is 15th in the league. The Tigers have earned 109 home runs, which is 19th in the MLB. Detroit not been great on the mound and in the field. The Tigers have held their opponents to 464 runs, which is 21st in the league.
Detroit has been slightly better on both sides of the ball throughout this season. The Tigers will look to keep up their success in this one. Detroit has been great on both sides of the field in this series and will look to continue to stump the Rangers. If Texas can grab an early lead though, they could bounce back with a huge win in this one.
I expect Mike Foltynewicz to get the start on the mound for the Rangers in this one. Foltnewicz has started in 19 games this season, going 2-9 throughout those matchups. He has put up a 5.91 ERA and a WHIP of 1.34 in those games played. Foltnewicz pitched an inning and two thirds in his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays. He gave up eight hits and ten runs in the loss.
Tyler Alexander will likely get the nod at pitcher for Detroit on Thursday afternoon. Alexander has earned a record of 1-1 throughout his 27 games played. He has posted an ERA of 4.40 and a 1.35 WHIP in those games. Alexander’s last start was against the Minnesota Twins. He gave up four hits and two runs through three and a third innings.
Alexander has been the better pitcher so far this season. He has only started 3 of his 27 games played though this season. Foltynewicz struggled heavily his last time on the mound and will look for a big bounce back performance. If he can come out stronger in this one, he could give the Rangers a good chance to win this one.
The Tigers have dominated Texas throughout this series, but I think that the Rangers will bounce back to close out this series. Texas has lost eight games in a row, which is going to end at some point. I think that the Rangers can put together a better performance against a Detroit team that has not been great this season. If Texas can jump out to an early lead, I think they can pull off the upset.
BetOnline has Detroit listed as a -116 against the money line in this one. This implies that the Tigers will win this game around 53.7 percent of the time. I think that this line is about right with how Detroit has played this series. I think that the Rangers will avoid the sweep though in this one. As solid underdogs, I am taking Texas to finally end this losing slide.
