Our game from yesterday had an hour long delay before things got underway due to rain. Games with delays before the game even starts notoriously are low scoring, so it was unfortunate the rain put a hamper on things. Once the game started, Kazmir and Hammel were dishing like it was Corbin vs. Starsburg or something. In fact, Kazmir took a no-hitter late into the contest. Everyone has a team that they can’t win on and it seems like Orioles’ games have been my kryptonite this season. I am fairly certain I am 0-3 betting on games that involve Baltimore.
Today isn’t a traditional weekday kind of card; it looks more like a Sunday offering. There are only a handful of night games and none of them very appealing to me. I am posting this article rather early Thursday morning, so you guys have an opportunity to get these bets in for this afternoons action.
Texas Rangers -128 at New York Yankees +108 (Total: 9)
Derek Holland (5-4, 3.43 ERA) vs. Phil Hughes (3-6, 5.09 ERA)
Nice way to kick the day off with a little afternoon baseball on a Thursday afternoon between the Rangers and Yankees at Yankees Stadium. It isn’t the usual Yankees’ lineup we have been accustomed to seeing, but the Yankees have been trying to make things work without the likes of Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, and of course Derek Jeter. It has been a season with mixed results, but being without the players they are, 42-34 is an excellent record. Robinson Cano has been doing his best to carry the load, and outfielder Ichiro Suzuki has been holding his own, belting two dingers in back-to-back games.
Sabathia hasn’t been Satbathia like this season, and the rest of the pitching staff has been a little all over the place, so it is quite astounding how far they have gotten this season. Phil Hughes is no exception, as he could be doing more for the Yankees this season. He will need to fend off a Rangers’ team that packs plenty of punch offensively. They showcased that last night by capturing an 8-5 victory behind Justin Grimm. The most frightening part of Hughes’ game has been his lackluster showings at Yankees Stadium. It isn’t the most pitcher friendly park, but he has to do better than a 6.69 ERA at home. In his last three home starts, he has an ERA of 13.91! Hughes has a WHIP of 1.66 and OBP of .369 to go along with his less than favorable ERA in 2013 at Yankees Stadium.
Conversely, Rangers’ starter Derek Holland needs to get back to early 2013 form for the Rangers to have a nice complement to Yu Darvish. Holland’s ERA of 3.43 on the year isn’t all that bad, but if you look at his recent starts things look uglier: 6.23 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and .354 OBP in his last three outings.
While I think Holland will ultimately be the victor today, he will probably concede a few runs to go along with an ugly game from Hughes. Lean to the Rangers team total OVER and Rangers ML, with the OVER 9 our official play.
Free Pick: OVER 9
Arizona Diamondbacks +135 at Washington Nationals -155 (Total: 6.5)
Patrick Corbin (9-0, 2.19 ERA) vs. Stephen Strasburg (4-6, 2.40 ERA)
How could I forget about my old friend Patrick Corbin. This will be, I think, the third straight Corbin game I have written up on. Why not, right? The kid has been absolute money this season. The first two Corbin games came up golden, easily cashing both unders. His latest masterful performance came Saturday night against the Cincinnati Reds, only allowing 1 run on 3 hits over 8 innings of work. After getting touched up for 4 runs against the Dodgers, Corbin has come back in a big way, giving up only 5 hits in two games.
On the other side is another young pitching phenom, Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg has been virtually untouchable at home this season with a 1.12 ERA, .233 OBP, and 0.80 WHIP. He also has allowed only 1 homerun during that span. This isn’t just a few innings pitched either, Strasburg has 40 innings under his belt at home.
I think this wager is too hard for me to pass up. It’s not often you get this kind of pitching matchup presenting itself, so I am going to try and take advantage of it with another Corbin UNDER wager. Both pitchers should be able to do more than enough to help us out today.
