Rays vs. Red Sox Pick MLB – July 22nd

A new week kicks off, and it can’t come soon enough for me after a rough weekend of swings and misses.  There are some good series kicking off tonight; Tampa Bay and Boston, Washington at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati visiting San Francisco, and the Yankees heading to Texas to continue the brutal beginning to their second half schedule.

Let’s focus tonight’s pick on one of the hottest teams in baseball setting their sights on the division leader with a very real expectation of taking over the top spot; the Tampa Bay Rays.

Today’s Free Pick:

Tampa Bay Rays -125 at Boston Red Sox +115 (Total: 9)

Matt Moore (13-3, 3.44 ERA) vs. Brandon Workman (0-0, 5.40 ERA)

Matt Moore gets the ball tonight with the streaking Rays closed to just 1 ½ games behind the Red Sox and with a win tonight pulling them even in the loss column.  When you consider they were in fourth place and nearly double-digit games back just a month ago.  They have gone 19-4 in their last 23 games, and 17-2 in their last 19 games.  They have struggled against the Red Sox this year, going just 3-6 in their last nine games, but if they are ever going to turn it around, it seems like this series is the prime time to turn the tables.

The Red Sox are flying high off the eleventh inning walkoff homerun from Mike Napoli last night to take the series over their hated rival Yankees.  However, they have to move on quickly tonight and rookie Brandon Workman is going to need to give them a solid outing if they hope to cool off Tampa Bay.

Matt Moore became the first Ray to amass 13 wins before the All Star Break in franchise history, and he hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down, in fact his last three starts have been absolutely spectacular.  He is a perfect 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA and a microscopic WHIP of just 0.82.

I like Moore to continue both his hot play, as well as the Rays hot play behind him tonight in Fenway Park.  But even more than I like Moore, I really like this game staying UNDER 9.  I figured this game would be an 8.5, maybe even an 8 considering how spectacular Matt Moore has pitched.  At a full nine runs on the runline, it is a good value play tonight.
