The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox continue their weekend series with one of the aces of MLB taking the mound. The Red Sox were delighted to welcome Chris Sale to Boston in the offseason, and Sale had to be happy to get away from Chicago. He was counting the days before he could leave town last season. Sale came over from the White Sox where his talents were going to waste, to a team who have postseason potential.
The Red Sox, at 18-17, will look to respond after dropping one last night by a score of 5-4 to the Rays. It’s a pretty vanilla record for the Red Sox, who have mostly been plagued by ineffective play from their offense. Pitching, led by Chris Sale, have been serviceable. However, the offense has been bogging them down some. No David Ortiz certainly is impacting that. But there is still some young playmakers on this team who the Red Sox are counting on to breakout. Like a lot of other players who are waiting to heat up, so are some Boston hitters. I’m going to get straight to our Rays vs. Red Sox pick, live from Las Vegas. On a side note, I’ve played video poker three times in the last year, and every time I have come a card short of hitting a royal flush. The third coming tonight, sigh.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox Pick
Blake Snell (0-3, 3.96 ERA) vs. Chris Sale (3-2, 1.92 ERA)
Sale has been quite a force, playing with a purpose and something to prove. He isn’t taking the money and running, that much is definitely true. Sale holds one of the top ERA’s in all of baseball, with a whopping ERA of just 1.92. He isn’t allowing many runners on base either, as his WHIP stands at 0.79. With Snell, I think he is pitching worse than his ERA is indicating. ERA’s can tell you a lot, but not everything.
Snell has an average ERA, but his WHIP is all out of whack. Note that Snell possesses a 3.96 ERA but his WHIP is 1.62. That isn’t any good at all. In his last three outings, he posted an ERA of 4.80 but again, he’s putting way too many runners on the bases, a 1.93 WHIP. In other words, Snell has been escaping major damage. This is going to eventually catch up to him, and against Sale, there is little room for error. I see the Red Sox bouncing back in a big way over the Rays. They erase the loss yesterday, and pick up an easy winner behind Sale. We’re going with the Red Sox RL to provide us with a winning pick Saturday evening.
PICK: RED SOX -1.5 (-105)
