Yesterday’s underdog selection came up short, more due to Justin Masterson’s odd decisions on the baseball field rather than his performance on the mound. First, he went Manny Ramirez and cut off a throw the plate about twenty five feet in front of the dish, allowing the run to score easily when it appeared they had a good chance to cut down the run. Later, he sailed an errant pickoff attempt into centerfield – even though there was NO chance to pick off the runner. Masterson was master-ful against Cincinnati to end the Tribe’s last losing streak, but instead it was the Bronx Bombers getting off the schnide.
Tonight we will try to rebound with a nice Tuesday winner.
Today’s Free Pick:
Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers (Total: 8)
Matt Moore (8-0, 2.08 ERA) vs. Anabal Sanchez (5-5, 2.79 ERA)
Matt Moore is living up to his tremendous hype and then some so far in 2013. The young fireballer is a perfect 8-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a WHIP of just 1.01, and despite pitching on the same team as defending Cy Young winner David Price is emerging as the 1A on a loaded pitching staff. Right now, he is the odds on favorite to start the All Star Game for the American League, and he has a great chance to put another feather in his cap tonight against the most productive lineup in major league baseball.
Meanwhile, Anabal Sanchez has been masterful for the Tigers. His record suggests mediocrity, but his 2.79 ERA is fantastic and his 1.13 WHIP is only .05 behind Matt Moore. He deserves far better than his record, especially given the lineup backing him up. However, the Tigers are just 5-6 as a team in games he has started.
The biggest difference is Matt Moore is on fire; posting a 1.29 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in his last three outings, while Sanchez has shown some signs of beginning to regress back to the norm. He has a 4.79 ERA in his last three starts, and while Tampa Bay doesn’t have the lineup potency of the Tigers, the do have a clear pitching edge tonight.
SO if I can get a guy who HASN’T LOST against a pitcher showing signs of decline and two teams overall with similar records at PLUS money, I’m seeing big value. If I can get it at the current +132, I’m jumping in.
Free Pick: Tampa Bay Rays to WIN +132
