A tough night in MLB last night as the Padres rose to the challenge and beat the Dodgers as a heavy underdog, 6-3. It gave us a rare losing night, as that was the only play going, but we will try to rebound tonight with a few good matchups.
Boston Red Sox -107 at Cleveland Indians -101 (Total: 8.5)
Felix Doubront vs. Ubaldo Jimenez
The Red Sox will no doubt be playing with heavy hearts after the horrific event that transpired at yesterday’s Boston Marathon. The joy of a walk-off Red Sox win on Patriot’s Day, a great holiday in Boston, was quickly evaporated by horror. It goes without saying, it puts any game in it’s proper context…
That said, the Sox will be taking the field tonight in Cleveland and facing a pitcher who can be fantastic or terrible, and often in the same start. Ubaldo Jimenez possesses no-hit stuff on his good days, but can be erratic and things can unravel quickly. He looked fantastic in his first start, yet revereted to the Jimenez of 2012 in his last outing against the Yankees, allowing 7 runs in just 4 1/3 innings.
He will be pitching on some extra rest after a few rainouts, so there is optimism he will be very sharp today.
For Boston, they will counter with Doubront, who will be making just his second start of the year and his first since April 5th. Boston’s pitching has been good this season so far, and if they can get some consistent innings, they will certainly be a factor on the AL East.
This game is a near pick-em, so I’ll go with the more talented, albeit more erratic, pitcher throwing in his home ballpark. I’d also expect neither pitcher to be dominant, so the 8.5 run total certainly feels reachable. I like this to be a 7-4 type ballgame.
Free Pick: Cleveland Indians to WIN -101 & Run TOTAL OVER 8.5 (-105)
Texas Rangers -125 at Chicago Cubs +116 (Total: 8)
Derrick Holland vs. Travis Wood
The Rangers offense certainly isn’t what it was last year with a healthy Josh Hamilton (and don’t underestimate the loss of Michael Young as well), but they are beginning to come around a bit. Derrick Holland will get the ball tonight, and though he hasn’t earned a win in his first two starts, he has pitched well with a 2.40 ERA and a WHIP of just 1.00.
Travis Wood has been fantastic so far for the Cubs, but I expect the lefty will get a bit of a reality check tonight against a potentially potent Ranger lineup. Wood is 1-0 (tam is 2-0) with a 1.59 ERA. It’d be hard to ask for much more in the early going, but the line is a great value for the Rangers tonight. They have the more talented pitcher on the mound and the more talented team. That makes -125 a pretty good value.
Free Pick: Texas Rangers +125
