Yesterday’s Cincinnati Reds pick came up short when they were three-hit by Wily Peralta. The Reds lost a second straight tight ballgame and will now have to win to avoid a sweep by the last-place Milwaukee Brewers. Elsewhere in baseball, the A’s have taken the first two of the series against Pittsburgh (is this the beginning of their regression to the norm? They’ve lost three series in a row now) and St. Louis once again leads the NL Central and has the best record in baseball.
Let’s try to get back on the winning track tonight with a pick on a late night game out West.
Boston Red Sox -128 at Seattle Mariners +118 (Total: 8)
Felix Doubront (5-3, 4.11 ERA) vs. Aaron Harang (4-7, 4.92 ERA)
The Red Sox weren’t picked by much of anyone to be a factor in the AL East, let alone to have the best record in the American League. They enter tonight playing near .600 baseball and have won six of the last nine games, including a skid-stopping 11-8 win last night. It is somewhat concerning that the Sox have given up 19 runs in the first two games in the series to the light-hitting Mariners, but they will look to Doubront tonight to slow down the Mariner offense and give the bullpen a much-needed breather.
Seattle has played solid ball this past week, winning a series in Cincinnati and taking the first game against Boston. They are just 5-5 in their last ten games, but have won two series in a row on the road against two of the best teams in baseball; Cincinnati and Texas. However, Aaron Harang has had his share of struggles this season, with an ERA near five. His WHIP is a pretty respectable 1.23 however, and he has looked stronger in his last three outings.
I think Boston is a good play to win tonight at just -128, but my official pick is the OVER. Boston has a tired bullpen, and it doesn’t seem terribly likely Doubront will give them more than six innings. His ERA and record are decent, but his WHIP of 1.45 is concerning. That’s a LOT of base runners and a lot of pitches thrown. That bodes well for Seattle’s offense staying hot, and we all know what Boston’s offense is capable of doing. I like both teams to score some runs tonight and push well over the total of eight.
