Red Sox vs. Orioles Pick MLB – June 13th

Last night was just one of those nights. It looked promising early on, but soon turned to a bet up in flames. Chris hit the DBacks in extra innings, so that was at least a nice way to cap that game off. While the score indicated a complete misread on my part, if Corbin didn’t allow that train wreck of a 5th inning, then the bet would have cashed. There was only one run scored after that point, so we would have looked at a 4-1 or 4-2 final as the damage was limited in that spot. Nevertheless, that is baseball, things can change on an instant, especially with unders. I’m still on a nice roll, though, going 7-1 with my total picks in my last eight.

Free MLB Pick:

Boston Red Sox -108 at Baltimore Orioles -102 (Total: 9.5)

Felix Doubront (4-3, 4.84 ERA) vs. Kevin Gausman (6-1, 8.84 ERA)

With a light card on tap for tonight, this game probably has the most intrigue for fans alike, and the betting public. Both teams hope to be in the thick of things come September. Many people casted the Red Sox off at the beginning of the season, but it appears like they are going to coast into the playoffs, and perhaps even, be a favorite to go deep. The Orioles figure to be fighting for a playoff spot come September, but they don’t have it easy in the AL East. The Orioles have one of the best offenses in the league, getting the majority of their runs from the long ball, but pitching has held them back significantly. If the Orioles had an ace, or in the least a couple of good pitchers, I think they would run away with the division.

The Orioles trot out Kevin Gausman to try and silence the Red Sox bats tonight. Gausman is a pitcher that the Orioles are banking on that will turn into an ace one day. He has all the right stuff, but needs another year or two to develop, if he does at all. His 2013 numbers certainly do not indicate that he will be the Orioles’ feature pitcher in the future. However, he has only started four games so far this season. His starts so far have been a little of good, and a lot of bad. His only quality start came on June 2nd against the Detroit Tigers. And as a Tigers’ fan, the Tigers are clueless against pitchers they have never seen before. In his other starts, he allowed 7 runs to the Rays and Nationals, and then 4 in his debut against the Blue Jays.

There are question marks surrounding Felix Doubront of the Red Sox as well. This is his fourth season with the ball club, and there have been no indications of him improving from his rookie season. He has maintained a steady ERA around the 4.50 range for his career. Last year was his first season as a fulltime starter, producing a 4.86 ERA, not far off from his 4.84 this season. Doubront’s numbers start to slip when he hits the road, with a 4.70 ERA and lackluster .390 OBP, Doubront will need to bring a better effort tonight against the Orioles.

The direst statistic there is the .390 OBP. The Orioles are one of the best in bringing runners in via homeruns. Consequently, if Doubront loads the bases up, like he is accustomed to doing on the road, the runs could come in bunches against him tonight. I think this will be a high scoring, entertaining series throughout, so give me the over for the first game on the docket.
