It was a nice 2-0 day with MLB picks, and a perfect 3-0 day when adding in the NBA winner. But let me assure you, I’m not bragging about my genius on this one. For those of you who saw the end of the Rangers vs. Mariners game, you know we caught a break last night! The Rangers trailed 2-1 heading into the 9th when things got a little crazy. New Mariners closer Fernando Rodney walked himself into trouble, but seemingly had the game won when he induced a two-out grounder to third base. The easy throw to second baser for the game-ending force out was high, pulling the second baseman off the bag, and all runners were safe.
Two pitches later, Rodney uncorked a wild pitch (emphasis on WILD. It was hit-the-mascot Bull Durham wide) plating the tying run. It was all but automatic at that point – another hit dropped into the outfield and the Rangers celebrated their 3-2 win like they clinched a playoff spot.
Crazy, crazy stuff. But we will take it gladly, and pile another pair of winners onto a nice start of the season.
Let’s see if we can get a few with a little more breathing room and less drama tonight!
Today’s Free Picks:
Boston Red Sox +106 at Chicago White Sox -115 (Total: 7.5)
John Lester (1-2, 2.57 ERA) vs. Chris Sale (3-0, 2.66 ERA)
I know it is still VERY early in the season, but to this point, the better “Sox” haven’t been the defending World Series Champs; it’s been the guys in the South side of Chicago. The biggest issue for the Sox has been generating offense. Lester’s ERA is great. His record isn’t – because he just hasn’t gotten the same kind of run support he has traditionally enjoyed.
The Red Sox are averaging just 3.53 runs per game. Chicago is averaging a staggering 5.73. I don’t think they’ll shell Lester tonight, but this offense is capable of giving Chris Sale enough of a cushion to earn yet another win. The team names make it feel like a mismatch, which helps get a really good price for the White Sox tonight.
I’ll take Chris Sale at home facing a scuffling Red Sox lineup.
Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers (Total: 9)
Erasmo Ramirez (0-2, 5.66 ERA) vs. Tanner Scheppers (0-1, 7.88 ERA)
Let’s go right back to Texas just twelve hours after last night’s madness. I have a feeling we will see both offenses wake up this afternoon, as so often happens the day game after a top-tier pitcher’s duel. There’s no King Felix or Yu Darvish on the hill today, so look for these two talented lineups to have a nice day.
Erasmo Ramirez could be in for a long day, as the Ranger offense is overdue for an explosion. Likewise, it’s been a rough start to the season for Tanner Scheppers, allowing nearly a run every inning he goes to the mound.
I like some fireworks today and some runs crossing the plate to cap off a good series.
