Red Sox vs. Yankees Pick MLB – September 5th

Holy offensive explosion!  Last night featured a whopping ten games with double-digit run totals highlighted by Boston putting up TWENTY runs by themselves.  It ended up being a good day for OVER bettors.  Unfortunately, I had the UNDER 10.5 in the Dodgers vs. Rockies tilt.  Things were looking pretty good at 4-2 in the seventh before dueling bullpen meltdowns evaporated our profits late.

We will try to get back on track today and pluck a winner out of a very limited slate of action, as there are a few good baseball games tonight (though most folks will be watching the kickoff of the NFL!)

Boston Red Sox -108 at New York Yankees -102 (Total: 8.5)

Jake Peavy (11-5, 3.91 ERA) vs. Ivan Nova (8-4, 2.88 ERA)

This series finally regains some of its classic luster this week, as the Yankees have climbed back in the playoff race and suddenly these games REALLY mean something.  The Yankees are only 2 ½ games out of the final wildcard spot, and now have a healthy A-Rod and Jeter and are looking for a late season miracle pennant race comeback.

It won’t be easy.  Just in case anyone forgot who the best offensive team in baseball is, Boston send a nice reminder to the league touching up the Tigers for a season-high 20 runs.  The Sox are hitting a ridiculous .285 as a team and have been piling on the runs all season long.

However, the Yankees will counter with a hot pitcher in Ivan Nova.  His season ERA has pulled under 3.00, he is 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA.  He has pitched into at least the seventh inning in every one of those games and allowed three or less runs in all six starts.  Facing the Red Sox is a challenging task, but I think Nova might benefit from the bizarre nature of baseball that often sees a team score a dozen runs one night and then be totally baffled the next.

The Red Sox counter with a pitcher who enters event HOTTER, though he will be getting his initiation to the intensity of Sox/Yankees madness tonight.  Peavy has gone 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA and 0.74 WHIP in his last three outings.  He has been the big-time pick-up the Sox were hoping for and could be a HUGE factor in the postseason.  Tonight will be a good practice run for Boston-level playoff intensity.

This should be a great game, and not just because of the rivalry and the names on the front of the jerseys.   It’s a great pitching matchup, and there is big time playoff berths on the line.  I like a tense, low-scoring contest tonight.  Enjoy the game (if you can squeeze it in between football…)
