The Houston Astros are coming off an ugly stretch over the weekend. Kudos to the Seattle Mariners in what was a crucial series for them. They could have fell back and provided the Athletics with a comfortable cushion, but the Mariners fought back and didn’t allow it to happen. The Mariners and A’s are currently in an important battle in Oakland. A good effort against the Athletics, and the Mariners could jump ahead by the end of the series.
It would be the Mariners to provide false hope to their fans in September. Whoever wins that final wildcard, it looks likely that their opponent is going to be the Yankees. The Yankees don’t scare me much and would give either a legitimate shot at winning at Yankee Stadium. Luis Severino didn’t look himself again last night against a bad Mets’ offense.
The Astros took four losses in a row against the Mariners. There were probably more than a few people out there who chased the ‘Stros after they lost the first one. While the Athletics try and protect the final wildcard, they also have a chance at catching the Astros. Thanks to their brutal weekend against the Mariners, the A’s are within striking distance. The Athletics just about choked away a big lead last night, but managed to hold on for a 7-6 win. Justin Verlander, who is coming off a brutal start against the Mariners, will look to turn the page and bounce back this evening. German Marquez will counter for the Rockies. The Rockies are just a game back in the NL West now, so every game is critical. Get our free Rockies vs. Astros pick below.
Colorado Rockies vs. Houston Astros Pick
German Marquez (9-9, 4.69 ERA) vs. Justin Verlander (11-7, 2.50 ERA)
Justin Verlander wasn’t on his game from the get-go against the Mariners. He was exploited right out of the gate with 6 runs allowed in just 2 innings on the mound. The Astros waited to see if he could work his way out of trouble and settle down, but Verlander just didn’t have the stuff on that particular night. It wasn’t a positive weekend for the pitching in Houston.
The last time JV gave up 5 or more runs, he returned in his next outing to shut the Angels down for no runs. Prior to that, he gave up 4 hits and 2 runs across 7 innings after coming off a start in which he allowed 5 to the Rays. Verlander has proven to be able to come back strong following rough outings. He’s done a nice job against the Rockies in his career, holding them to a .197 batting average in 66 at-bats. Note that Jose Altuve isn’t scheduled to return at any point in the Astros’ homestand. He will provide an instant jolt once they get his bat back in the lineup.
Marquez enters with an ERA of 4.69 on the year. He’s been decent for the Rockies in his third season. Marquez finished with an ERA of 4.39 in 2017, so if he stays the course, he isn’t going to beat that, though. He hasn’t liked pitching at Coors Field, but been fine on the road with a 3.09 ERA. While the Astros feel down in the dumps after getting swept by the Mariners, the Rockies are coming off three wins in a row against the Dodgers. I think they are going to run into a focused Astros team tonight, however. We should see a much better performance by Verlander after getting rocked. The Astros get out of Tuesday night with a 5-2 or 6-3 win as they get this ship back on track.
