Last night’s Giants and Brewers game ended in a push as Ty Blach was unable to keep his hot month rolling, allowing five runs in a little over five innings in a 6-3 Giants loss. The OVER/UNDER was 9 at the time of writing (though some might have gotten a win at 9.5) so we get a refund and move on to a new day, and hopefully a positive result.
The Brewers win coupled with the Cubs five-game win streak being halted by the Marlins put the Brewers back in first, a game a head of the Northsiders and three games ahead of the surprising Reds who capped off a sweep of the Cardinals.
Out West, the Nationals @ Dodgers duel between Kershaw and Strasburg had a distinctly October feel, as both were razor sharp, allowing just one earned run each and combining for 17 strikeouts. The Nats two errors proved costly, as an unearned run in the sixth was the difference in the 2-1 Dodgers victory. Los Angeles kept pace with the blistering NL West leader Colorado (two game lead) and Arizona (tied) who also won last night.
Let’s get a jump start on a big weekend with a winning play. Here’s my favorite on the board…
Today’s MLB Pick:
Colorado Rockies +170 at Chicago Cubs -177 (Total: 8.5)
Tyler Chatwood (5-7, 4.60 ERA) vs. Jon Lester (3-3, 3.91 ERA)
Like most of the Cubs starters in 2017, the season isn’t looking as rosey as last year for Jon Lester. His second to last outing, the hyped duel with Clayton Kershaw was a clunker, which drags down his numbers, especially the ERA to a slightly misleading almost-four. His last outing was closer to form, a six-inning, three run outing against the Cardinals. He has been pretty good most of the season, but far from the dominant Cy Young contender and bonafides ace he has been the past three seasons in Chicago. He will be looking to get back on track today in a tough spot, facing a potent Rockies offense. At home, however, he is 3-0 with a 2.15 ERA this season.
Opposing him is Tyler Chatwood, who, like the rest of the Rox whose reputation is that their performance is ballpark-aided – he has been excellent on the ROAD. It is normal for pitchers to fare better away from the Mile High air, but not as common for the Rockies as an overall ballclub. The Rockies have been one of the best road bets in baseball in 2017 and the Cubs have been one of the worst home bets in baseball (and the worst on the runline). Chatwood is 3-3 with a sparkling 2.68 ERA (8th in the NL) away from home.
This has the makings of a pitcher-centric contest, making the 8.5 total a little lofty. I’ll take the UNDER tonight and bank on a solid outing from Lester and a typically strong road performance from Chatwood.
Today’s MLB Pick: RUN TOTAL UNDER 8.5
