We had a nice day in MLB picks yesterday, cashing a big underdog winner with the Texas Rangers at +165 knocking off King Felix and the Mariners. We also had the over, banking again on Felix’s historic difficulties with the Rangers hitters, making for a nice big-profit evening.
We definitely had a better day than the Cincinnati Reds who lost a second straight game to the Braves, but also lost the hottest hitter in the National League, Devon Mesoraco, in the process. The catcher was hitting just under .500 with an RBI per game in his 14 games played. Sending him to the disabled list at the same time the Milwaukee Brewers are racing to the best record in the majors could just dig a whole too big to dig out of in the NL Central.
It’s Sunday, which means most of the games today are matinees, so make sure to plan any action you have going today accordingly.
Let’s slide into Sunday’s free picks.
Colorado Rockies +152 at Los Angeles Dodgers -162 (Total: 7)
Jorge De La Rosa (1-3, 6.38 ERA) vs. Hyun-jin Ryu (3-1, 2.12 ERA)
The Dodgers are a huge favorite today behind the prohibitive starting pitching advantage, and I would be surprised if they do not win the game this afternoon. But I’m not a huge fan of laying -162 on a team when they are facing a pitcher they hit well and I can get a better value on the OVER.
Seven runs is a fairly low line for today’s game and about half a run lower than I expected. The Rockies offense has potential to put up runs on any night, even against good pitching, The Rockies average a robust 5.38 runs per game average, which is tops in the league. Additionally, I would be surprised if De La Rosa wasn’t substantially touched up by the Dodger offense that has been averaging over four runs a game themselves.
Look for some Sunday afternoon fireworks in Chavez Ravine this afternoon. I’ll take the OVER.
Los Angeles Angels +155 at New York Yankees -165 (Total: 7)
Garrett Richards (2-0, 2.52 ERA) vs. Masahiro Tanaka (3-0, 2.15 ERA)
The hype around Tanaka has already been pretty big, but tonight has the potential to be a big coming out party for him on a national level. To this point, he has been the true ace of the Yankees’ staff and worth the tremendous investment the team made to bring him to the States and to the Yankees.
Garrett Richards has been fantastic as well. He is also perfect on the season with an ERA of 2.52. The Angels have had his back in major way (as well as every other pitcher) averaging over five and a half runs per game. SO will they be the first team to be a major obstacle for Tanaka??
I’ll take the “good pitching beats good hitting” philosophy in tonight’s game. I’m going to swallow the high price tonight because I really think Tanaka throws a gem on Sunday Night Baseball. He seems like a guy who really loves the spotlight and he will have it tonight. Look for good things.
