Rockies vs. Orioles Pick MLB – August 17th

Another easy winner yesterday, cashing the under in the Dodgers/Phillies game. How about them Dodgers? I liked the Dodgers as well yesterday, but thought that line was a little fishy. At this point, I think all the books are banking on is that bettors are going to assume that the Dodgers are due for a loss. They’ll eventually lose, but they are going to be a tough team to beat come October. We still hit the under, so that’s all that matters here. Let’s look in another direction in the American League for Saturday’s free pick. A successful pick here and we are only one day away from going a perfect 7-0 on the week.

Free MLB Pick:

Colorado Rockies +165 at Baltimore Orioles -190 (Total: 9)

Chad Bettis (0-1, 5.06 ERA) vs. Bud Norris (8-10, 3.83 ERA)

The Colorado Rockies are up to their old tricks, which is, well, being average. I have called the Rockies one of the most vanilla teams in the Major League Baseball for awhile now and they aren’t disappointing that claim this season. You don’t even need to look at their W/L record, without looking it’s a sure bet they are a few games under .500, or hovering around that mark. The Rockies currently are 57-65, a record that would be better if they had a healthy Troy Tulowitzski and Carlos Gonzalez, but they’d still struggle to make any real noise. The Orioles on the other hand, are up down and everywhere in between. Win a few in a row and then drop a few is the motto of the Orioles’ season.

The Orioles are 65-55 on the season, a record that was probably what you could have forecasted at the beginning of the year. The Orioles aren’t going to be winning a championship, but they are a solid, good baseball club. Thanks to some heavy bats in the offense, the Orioles have enjoyed some success, including home run leader Chris Davis, Adam Jones, and Manny Machado. Their pitching leaves a lot to be desired, though. They went and acquired Bud Norris from the Astros, who is decent, but not the ace they sorely need. My problem with Norris is that he hasn’t faced a real offense at Camden Yards in Baltimore. He handled his former team quite well a few starts ago, but that is the only experience he has at Camden as an Oriole. I expect Norris to allow some runs in this game, but I also see the Orioles taking control of this game with their offense.

The Orioles will have the opportunity to tee-off on Chad Bettis. Bettis has little experience as a starter, with only 3 to his credit in his young career. Bettis hoped for a better start to his MLB career, posting an ERA of 5.06 in his first three starts. His numbers on the road are of particular concern, where he got dinged up at Atlanta in his first start giving up 5 runs. The Orioles hit right-handers pretty well at .268, so it could be a long night for the youngster.

The Rockies are capable of doing damage against righties, too. I think the Orioles will win this contest, but not before this game eclipses the posted total of 9. The Rockies hit a bump in the road without Tulowitzski, but they are a much better offense with him taking at bats. They should be able to help our cause doing some damage against Norris. I’ve hit plenty of under wagers lately, but I’m going to take a look at the over to keep the winning streak going.
