It’s a packed sports weekend, with a few awesome college football matchups and, of course, a full slate of Sunday NFL action. But there are still a few American League baseball games worth tuning in for as the race for home field advantage as well as the second and final playoff spot are still up for grabs.
Here’s a quick rundown: The Blue Jays and Royals both won last night, leaving them tied with two games to play. The Jays own the head-to-head tie breaker, so they still have an excellent chance to capture the Rogers Centre advantage and make their status as title favorites even more formidable. The Astros and Angels both won while Minnesota lost, so the Twins are now two back of the ‘Stros and a real long shot. There are about 8 tiebreaker scenarios still in play, so for now, we will just leave it with the simple, Houston controls their own fate. If they end up tied with Los Angeles, we will have an extra one-game playoff before the official wildcard one day playoff…
Phew…. Let’s keep it simple and pick today’s winner.

Today’s Free Pick:
Kansas City Royals -115 at Minnesota Twins +105 (Total: 7.5)
Yordano Ventura vs. Tommy Milone
It’s hard to find too many good wagering games today, as so many of the games have absolutely no meaning – ergo, random lineups, uncertain pitching matchups, odd bullpen patterns, etc. So it’s nice to find a game that has real meaning for both squads like today’s Royals vs. Twins matchup. The Twins are clinging to their playoff lives, while Kansas City is chasing the all-important home field advantage. Today’s game will impact both sides.
The Royals have the starting pitching edge, especially going off recent performances. Ventura is 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA in his last three outings and has allowed just four walks against 14 strikeouts. Meanwhile, Milone has gotten shelled, posting an ERA near double digits at 9.28 and a WHIP of 1.98. He has only strikeout seven batters and allowed five walks. I expect him to struggle with the Royals lineup that is hitting .269 as a team against left handed pitching.
Minnesota is just 3-7 in their last ten home games, a sad stat that probably will be the eventual undoing of their season. It’s been a positive year in Minny – far better than anyone could have reasonably expected. But that fun ride comes to an end today as the Royals officially end the Twins postseason dreams.
