The San Diego Padres are in Chicago looking to give the Cubs more misery. The Cubs are on a six-game losing streak and didn’t come close the last two days against the Yankees. Following a 2-1 loss on Friday night, the Cubs were embarrassed by a score of 8-0 and 18-4.
Matt Swarmer went 5 innings with 7 hits, and 6 earned runs conceded. He was off to a solid start in his major league career, but couldn’t navigate past the Yankees lineup. The following afternoon, Keegan Thompson and Daniel Norris combined to give up 8 earned runs in 2.2 frames.
The Cubs brought in 1B Frank Schwindel to pitch in the eighth inning.

The Cubs had first basemen Frank Schwindel throwing a BP session in the 8th inning to finish off the blowout. Matt Carpenter had a monster game for the Yankees with 7 RBIs on 4-for-3 hitting.
They also lost before that series, with two losses to the Cardinals and a 9-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. The Cubs are down to 23-36 on the season for a 2.5-game advantage on the Cincinnati Reds.
There wasn’t much expected from the Cubs this season, and they are dealing with many injuries now. The injury bug has hurt their rotation and bullpen.
The Padres are coming off back-to-back losses to the Colorado Rockies on the weekend. They started off well with a 9-0 and 2-1 win, but had to settle for a split after dropping a 4-2 decision on Sunday afternoon.
San Diego is going into the week at 37-24 and a half-game. The Giants swept the Dodgers at Oracle Park over the weekend. That allowed the Padres to remain close despite the two losses.
Steele is getting the starting call against ace Yu Darvish. Darvish hasn’t been the same pitcher on the road this season, so we’ll see how he handles this one at Wrigley Field. Head below for our free Cubs vs. Padres prediction on June 13, 2022.

Padres vs. Cubs Prediction:
The Padres are turning to Yu Darvish to complete two standout performances in a row. Darvish most recently neutralized the Mets in a 7-0 final.

He’s going into Wrigleyville with an ERA of 3.61 and a 1.10 WHIP. He’s capable of better numbers, with his numbers on the road holding him back. Darvish has a 1.35 ERA and 0.60 WHIP at home.
However, Darvish hasn’t figured it on the road. He is going into this one with an ERA of 5.82 and a 1.41 WHIP on the road.
He did look good against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in a recent road start. Darvish allowed 6 hits and no runs in a 2-0 win in Philadelphia.
It should at least be the case against the Cubs, where Darvish has been strong. The Cubs are hitting just .143 with no home runs against Darvish in his career.
San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs Betting Trends:
Padres
- Record (Last 10): 7-3
- 4-1 overall in their previous five games as a betting favorite
- 8-1 overall in their previous nine games on the road versus a left-handed starter
- 10-1 overall in their previous 11 games after their opponent allowed 5 or more runs
- 10-3 overall in their previous 13 games versus a left-handed starter
- 14-5 overall in their previous 19 games after a loss
Cubs
- Record (Last 10): 3-7
- 0-6 overall in their previous six games
- 0-4 overall in their previous four games after allowing 5 or more runs
- 20-44 overall in their previous 64 games as an underdog
- 19-44 overall in their previous 63 games at home
- 6-2 overall in their previous eight games on a Monday
I am confident in Darvish pitching in good form at Wrigley Field tonight. The Cubs are 19th in the majors with 4.33 runs per 9 innings, but their pitching is even more concerning.
The Cubs are the worst team in the majors, with 1.42 home runs allowed a game. Justin Steele hasn’t had that problem but is still struggling with a 4.79 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. Steele has a 7.07 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in his previous three attempts.
I’m going with the Padres to add to the Cubs’ problems tonight. The Cubs need to get healthier, but that’s not happening on Monday.
