San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies Pick – MLB July 13, 2022

The San Diego Padres failed to follow up and win back-to-back games at Coors Field last night. After a 6-5 win on Monday night, the Rockies struck back with a 5-3 win. Austin Gomber had a standout performance with 6 hits and 1 earned run allowed last night.

It’s not easy to go 6 innings without giving up a long ball at Coors Field. Gomber was in the zone and wasn’t going to be touched by the Padres. It wasn’t the same story for Mike Clevinger. The former Guardian allowed 5 hits and 4 earned runs in 5.1 frames.

The Padres are 50-39 and 7.5 games behind the LA Dodgers in the NL West. There is enough track left this season for the Padres to make a run, but it will require a healthy and contributing Fernando Tatis Jr.

Do I think the Padres are coming back to win the division? No. Even with Tatis Jr., it will be tough for the Padres to overtake the Dodgers. They could make it an interesting race, but the Dodgers haven’t yet reached their full stride in 2022.

The Padres have dropped three of four games going into Wednesday night.

They won the first two games of a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants. However, they regressed and lost both games of the back half of the series.

The Padres were thoroughly exposed on Sunday afternoon, as the Giants blew the doors off them for a 12-0 final. MacKenzie Gore was supposed to be the one to lead the Padres to a series win.

Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish have combined for a pretty potent punch on the mound for the Padres. Musgrove is receiving the call in a tricky assignment at Coors Field tonight. Chad Kuhl is expected for the Rockies.

Padres vs. Rockies Prediction:

The Rockies can hit, but only when they’re at Coors Field. Their numbers drop considerably on the road. Having said that, the Rockies are at home tonight, where they feel especially confident.

Overall, the Rockies are third in the majors with a team batting avearge of .257.

It’s never going to be easy to put together a dangerous pitching staff in Denver. At Coors Field, they are on fire with a team batting average of .277 and 6.02 runs per 9 innings. However, pitching remains a constant battle.

Kuhl has been pitching well, and unusually really well early in the season. However, he’s not a consistent option, like the rest of the rotation for the Rockies.

He’s posted an ERA of 4.26 in his 19 innings going into this start, including a masterful performance against the Dodgers. Kuhl allowed 3 home runs during that time.

Did Kuhl wear himself out against the Dodgers three starts ago?

Kuhl had the best performance of his career, as he pitched a complete game with 3 hits and no runs allowed in a 4-0 win. However, he was unable to stay on track in his next two performances.

San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 4-6
  • 1-6 overall in their previous seven games versus the Rockies
  • 1-11 overall in their previous 12 games at Colorado
  • 5-11 overall in their previous 16 games
  • 4-9 overall in their previous 13 games in July
  • 1-3 overall in their previous four games

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 11-1 overall in their previous 12 games at home versus the Padres
  • 8-3 overall in their previous 11 games at home
  • 4-2 in their previous six games
  • OVER is 3-1 in Chad Kuhl’s previous four starts
  • OVER is 10-5 in their previous 15 games on a Wednesday

  • After a memorable performance versus the Dodgers, Kuhl couldn’t get into form against the Diamondbacks at Coors and Chase Field. He was tagged for 7 hits and 5 earned runs in 5 innings at home, and then conceded 6 hits, 3 walks, and 4 earned runs through 5 innings in the desert.

The Padres have throttled Kuhl for a .407 batting average and 10 RBIs in 35 at-bats.

That doesn’t include Tatis Jr., only active members of the Padres tonight. This isn’t a lineup that he is going to like to see after coming off a couple of shaky attempts.

The Rockies are 28th in the majors, with 5.43 runs allowed per 9 innings. The bullpen is second-last in the majors with a 4.74 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.

Musgrove has a strong ERA of 2.09, but he’s shown some signs of tiredness recently. He has an ERA of 4.05 and a 0.95 WHIP entering Wednesday night.

I’m looking at the total in this one at Coors Field. Expect just enough runs to put this one OVER the total in a 7-4 or 7-5 final.
