San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Pick – MLB August 5, 2022

The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers meet for a marquee series at Dodger Stadium. This is going to be a good one and the most exciting series of the weekend. Everyone wants to see what the Padres’ new-look roster is going to do against the Dodgers.

The Padres made a big move with a trade for Juan Soto. The strongest rumor was Soto going to the Dodgers, but the Padres pulled a fast one and acquired Soto in a blockbuster deal. San Diego wants to win and they want to win now.

BETTER THAN THE DODGERS?
Does this make the Padres a better team? This is always the question when a big trade is made. One player doesn’t make a team, though, and the edge is still with the Dodgers.

Having said that, Soto with Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. looks scary. There isn’t a pitcher in the world that is going to like to play these three in the postseason. They’ll have to prove it on the diamond, though.

The Padres are 12.5 games behind the Dodgers at 61-47.

Catching the Dodgers for the NL West title is highly improbable, though getting into the postseason as a wildcard team is well within reach. That’s the most likely scenario. Acquiring Soto should make them the most dangerous wildcard team in the majors.

The Padres are coming off a 7-3 loss to the Dodgers to snap a five-game winning streak. Despite the loss, they’re still playing quality baseball. The Dodgers are just better at the moment, though, with five straight wins and in eight of their last nine outings.

Sean Manaea and Tony Gonsolin are in the saddle on the mound at Dodger Stadium. Gonsolin was the best in the rotation until recent troubles. He’ll look to bounce back against a dangerous San Diego lineup.

Padres vs. Dodgers Prediction:

Tony Gonsolin was rolling along before hitting recent turbulence. He was untouchable and the best the Dodgers had to offer in the rotation. Are his recent struggles something of a concern, though?

Overall, Gonsolin has an ERA of 2.41 and a 0.90 WHIP.

He hasn’t been in that form recently, though. Gonsolin has posted an ERA of 6.75 and a 1.44 WHIP in his previous three starts. After going 16 starts this season without allowing more than 2 earned runs, he’s pitched three straight games with 3 or more earned runs.

PADRES A TOUGH OUT
The Padres probably aren’t the team to see when struggling on the mound. This lineup is going to be dangerous with Juan Soto in the mix now.

San Diego was already dangerous this season. This was without Fernando Tatis Jr. If Tatis Jr. returns in good health, they’re going to have a three-headed monster in the lineup.

The Padres are 15th in the majors with 4.49 runs per 9 innings.

This is while hitting just 0.90 home runs per game for 24th. With the pop of Soto in the lineup, watch the Padres’ scoring improve considerably.

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Trends:

Padres

  • Record (Last 10): 7-3
  • 5-1 overall in their previous six games after a loss
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games versus the NL West
  • 7-3 overall in their previous ten games versus a team with a winning record
  • OVER is 8-3-1 in their previous 12 games
  • OVER is 6-2 overall in their previous eight games after a loss

Dodgers

  • Record (Last 10): 8-2
  • 5-0 overall in their previous five games
  • 9-1 overall in their previous ten games at home versus the Padres
  • 54-17 overall in their previous 71 games at home
  • 37-16 overall in their previous 53 games on a Friday
  • 41-15 overall in their previous 56 games versus the Padres at home

  • Gonsolin hasn’t been at his best recently, and this doesn’t look like a good spot for him to turn things around. He will eventually, but I don’t know if it’s going to happen tonight.

The Dodgers should get to Sean Manaea and give Gonsolin solid run support, though.

Manaea is competent with an ERA of 4.25 and a 1.27 WHIP. That said, Manaea will need better than what he’s produced recently.

In his previous three starts, he has notched an ERA of 5.28 and a 1.63 WHIP. Opponents have recorded a .352 OBP vs Manaea during that time.

The Dodgers have had plenty of success with 8 home runs and 21 RBIs against Manaea in only 66 at-bats. It hasn’t taken the Dodgers long to score when Manaea is on the bump. There are three in the lineup that has hit at least 2 home runs against Manaea.

I’m looking at runs on the board tonight, with the OVER worth a look in the opener of a huge series at Dodger Stadium.
