Mike Clevinger (3-2, 3.10 ERA) vs. Justus Sheffield (3-3, 4.06 ERA)
We’re back in San Diego for another edition of the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners at Petco Park. Just like last night, this game was supposed to be played at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, but the air quality was too poor in Seattle, so the series was moved to San Diego.
The Padres were certainly welcome to that idea. San Diego gets some bonus home games because of the switch. Then after this series against the Mariners, they’ll welcome the Angels for two games. Not a bad deal for the Padres. They are going to need all of the help they can down the stretch to catch the Dodgers in the NL West.
The Dodgers are up four games on the Padres, as the two traded wins on Friday night. San Diego made easy work of the Mariners with a 6-1 win, while the Dodgers blasted the Rockies, 15-6. The Padres got a standout performance from Chris Paddack on Friday night in that contest. Paddack went 6 innings with just 1 hit and no earned runs allowed.
That’s the kind of performance Paddack needed. He’s wavered a bit this season and hasn’t really been able to get into a rhythm, but that outing could get him going. The Padres have a potent pitching staff if Paddack gets rolling along with Mike Clevinger. Clevinger was acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Indians to bolster their rotation.
He had a falling out with the Indians after going to a bar for some drinks. The locker room wasn’t too thrilled with Clevinger possibly putting their health and season at risk. A trade was in the best interest for all parties.
Clevinger got put into a pretty good situation in San Diego with the Padres. He is scheduled to pitch at Petco tonight. The Mariners are expected to counter with Justus Sheffield. Head below for our free San Diego Padres vs. Seattle Mariners pick for September 19, 2020.
San Diego Padres vs Seattle Mariners MLB Betting Odds:
San Diego Padres vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction:
Mike Clevinger has been productive on the hill with an ERA of 3.10 and 1.18 WHIP in four starts as a member of the Indians and three with the Padres. In three outings with the Padres, Clevinger has a 3.00 ERA and 0.94 WHIP through 18 innings. His best work came in his most recent showing on September 13.
Clevinger went 7 innings and conceded just 2 hits versus the Giants. It was a nice response for Clevinger after he struggled against the Rockies. He’s been much better at home versus the road, so this venue change to Petco Park is nice for him.
Clevinger has posted an ERA of 2.35 and 0.95 WHIP through 30.2 innings at home. Teams are hitting just .194 against Clevinger when he’s in his home ballpark. Conversely, his numbers have deteriorated on the road, with an ERA of 5.40 and 1.90 WHIP through 10 innings.
He has allowed teams to hit .361 against him in that regard. With that in mind, Clevinger catches a break getting to pitch in San Diego tonight. But the same can’t be said for Justus Sheffield, who much prefers pitching at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Sheffield owns an ERA of 5.66 and 1.50 WHIP on the road as opposed to a 2.66 ERA and 1.10 WHIP at home. Unfortunately as a result of the wildfires, he’ll miss out on getting a home start he should have received. Sheffield was in a nice groove earlier in the season, but in his previous three performances, he’s netted an ERA of 4.82 and 1.34 WHIP. I think this game is another nice recipe for a comfortable San Diego win.
