Justin Dunn (1-1, 4.85 ERA) vs. Ross Stripling (3-1, 3.97 ERA)
The Los Angeles Dodgers completed their sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday with a 8-3 win. The Angels’ best chance of getting a win was on Saturday and they blew that lead. Trying to escape Mookie Betts is an impossible chore. Pitching around him isn’t advised either because the Dodgers have more bats than hurt a pitcher behind Betts.
Intentionally walking Barry Bonds made more sense because of the lack of power behind Bonds with the Giants, but if pitchers walk Betts, they are possibly setting up a painful inning because of the depth on the Dodgers. The Dodgers are on fire right now and go into Monday with a record of 16-7.
The Colorado Rockies were able to grab a 10-6 win yesterday, so they stay within two games of the Dodgers in the NL West. Good luck with keeping up with the Dodgers, though. I don’t think the Rockies are going to be able to keep pace, but that doesn’t mean they can’t reach the postseason in this expanded format.
From the way it looks at the moment, the Dodgers and New York Yankees appear to be on a collision course for the World Series. Even if we were playing a full season and started in September, that’d probably still ring true at this point in the year. That said, anything can happen, especially in a crazy year such as 2020.
The Dodgers have been well-documented to not play their best baseball in the playoffs before. However, that doesn’t take away from how talented this 2020 team is and the addition of Betts puts them over the top. Betts is a far superior player to Yasiel Puig when he was with the Dodgers.
It also doesn’t take away from how hot the Dodgers are at the moment. Dustin May and the Dodgers’ offense did everything correctly on Sunday for a 8-3 win. They will send out Ross Stripling to the bump looking for more of the same. The No. 8 prospect in the Mariners organization, Justin Dunn, is expected to counter. Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Dodgers MLB Baseball Betting Odds:
Seattle Mariners vs. LA Dodgers Prediction:
The Mariners will see what they get from Justin Dunn on Monday. With their season in the tubes before it began, it’s an opportunity for the Mariners to audition some of the younger prospects. Dunn is a 24-year-old rookie that saw a small sample size of action in 2019. He appeared in four games and held up well with a 2.70 ERA and 1.65 WHIP. Dunn was clearly putting too many on base, though.
If he were to play more than four games, I’m sure his ERA would have been higher than a 2.70. Dunn has made three starts this season and hopes to bring his ERA down against the Dodgers. He heads into Monday with an ERA of 4.85 and 1.62 WHIP. The same issue of putting too many runners on base is a concern. Through 13 innings of work, Dunn has yielded 11 hits and 10 walks. He must find better command and avoid walking batters. When that’s figured out, Dunn should start to find success.
This doesn’t look like a good matchup for Dunn to work on his control, though. He gets the Dodgers on Monday, fresh off 32 runs scored against the Angels in the last four days. The Dodgers are second in the major leagues with 5.45 runs scored per game. They are slightly behind the Yankees, but the Dodgers possess the superior pitching staff. Ross Stripling gets his turn in the rotation on Monday for the Dodgers.
Stripling was the victim of errors in his most recent outing against the Padres. He gave up 4 unearned runs and 2 earned. It was the second straight game that Stripling allowed a total of 4 or more runs, both of which were against the Padres. He heads into Monday with an ERA of 3.97 and 1.15 WHIP. Stripling has had a lot of success versus the Mariners in his career. They are hitting .169 with a .208 OBP in 32 at-bats. I think the Dodgers should be able to remain hot today. A letdown after beating up on the Angels is likely their only potential downfall on Monday.
