The New York Yankees will look to extend their healthy lead atop the American League standings when they continue their hard-fought series with the talented Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Last night, the Yanks throttled Seattle by a 7-2 score-line, with Aaron Judge crushing more home runs as he continues to hit them at a record-breaking pace.
And while the Yankees could slow down and cruise into the post-season, this veteran group will surely stay focused. They’re hitting the ball at great rates, and continue to receive quality pitching – though the numbers do indicate that some regression might loom eventually.
For the Mariners, a hot stretch before the All-Star break has put this young group firmly in the hunt for one of the coveted AL Wild-Card spots. The M’s went out recently and acquired top pitcher Luis Castillo from the Reds, and will turn to talented youngster Logan Gilbert on Tuesday night to try and even the series vs. New York.
PITCHING PROBABLES: Mariners: Logan Gilbert (10-4, 2.85 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 118 strikeouts); Yankees: Jameson Taillon (10-2, 3.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 92 strikeouts)

Gilbert will be countered by New York’s Jameson Taillon. The big Canadian flamethrower has enjoyed a great season thus far, and despite recently going through a tough stretch, he seems to have worked himself out of it. His velocity is back where it should be, while Taillon’s control has been much better. He will need to be sharp on Tuesday against a pesky Mariners lineup, and although they’re without Julio Rodriguez, this Seattle squad can score runs.

Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees Prediction:
Expect the Mariners to bounce back from yesterday’s putrid showing at Yankee Stadium. Marco Gonzales got hit around badly, and look for talented sophomore Logan Gilbert to be able to provide Seattle with a much-needed quality start.

While the Yankees are a talented group, they remain a squad miles ahead of many in the American League. Their approach and urgency surely differs from a Seattle squad scratching and clawing for improved playoff positioning, and a long-awaited wild-card spot. For the Mariners, their post-season starts now. Expect that urgency to play out Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, as they look to bust out of a mini-funk in a big way.
Seattle boasts a talented offense that can hurt a guy like Taillon in multiple ways. They’re patient at the dish, speedy on the bases, and possess great power to all fields. Even without phenomenal rookie Julio Rodriguez, this offense should score, and profiles well to hit at Yankee Stadium. Taillon enters Tuesday night in fine form, but the set-up of Seattle’s offense should be able to get to him. Look for big Seattle bat Ty France to have a big outing on Tuesday.

One thing Logan Gilbert has done this season is limit the long-ball, which New York lives and dies with. This team is strong in terms of power, but are only hitting .244 on the season. Expect Gilbert to be able to limit contact and base-runners, and if he can just avoid Aaron Judge three times through the order, the M’s represent solid value at a big underdog price on Tuesday night!

While the Mariners’ 14-game win streak now firmly a thing of the past, they aren’t as bad as their recent play would suggest. A tough schedule and some injuries have hurt this team, but the Mariners badly need positive results, and Gilbert has the potential and stuff to outduel Taillon on Tuesday. The youngster has dominated the Astros in recent starts, and should relish the chance to stymie the hot-hitting Yanks. At a juicy price, back the M’s to find a way on Tuesday night.
Mariners vs. Yankees Trends To Know:
- Mariners are 5-0 in their last 5 Tuesday games.
- Mariners are 6-1 in their last 7 vs. American League East.
- Mariners are 4-1 in their last 5 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- Mariners are 11-3 in their last 14 during game 2 of a series.
- Yankees are 2-8 in their last 10 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
- Yankees are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record.
- Mariners are 3-13 in the last 16 meetings in New York.
The Mariners need wins, but have fared well in bounceback spots. Logan Gilbert can get the job done, alongside a pesky, and youthful Seattle batting order. New York should struggle to generate baserunners against the Mariners’ starter, and look for Seattle to represent big value on the moneyline heading into Tuesday night action.
