St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds Pick – MLB July 24, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds wrap up a three-game series at the Great American Ball Park on Sunday afternoon. The Reds opened with a 9-5 win behind an offensive surge against Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright had his worst start of the season, as he was torched for 5 hits and 7 earned runs in 5.1 innings. However, the Cardinals were able to bounce back behind the strong arm of Steven Matz.

He lasted 5.1 innings with 3 hits and 2 earned runs allowed. Junior Fernandez yielded a run out of the bullpen, but it was a solid game for the pitching staff after a rough evening Friday.

Mike Minor struggled to find his stroke last night, as the Cardinals got to him for 8 hits and 5 earned runs across 4 innings. Tyler O’Neill had a big night on 2-for-5 hitting with 3 RBIs. Paul Goldschmidt also chipped in with 2 hits, 1 walk, and 2 RBIs.

The Cards are 51-45 and 1.5 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central.

Milwaukee did well to create some space between them and the Cardinals, but they tripped going into the All-Star break, enabling St. Louis to do some catching up. This is likely a division that goes down to the final days of the regular season.

Every game is huge for the Cardinals now. They especially have to win the games that they are expected to win. Passing up wins against inferior opponents will add up in September.

It’s hard to expect a sweep against every team with a losing record, but must win series consistently. Miles Mikolas will be asked to win the series for the Cards at the Great American Ball Park on Sunday. Tyler Mahle is scheduled to counter for the Reds.

Cardinals vs. Reds Prediction:

The Reds will look to Tyler Mahle to spin a better game than Mike Minor at home last night. Mahle hasn’t been in the best form on the hill, but he could be worse. He’s coming off two solid campaigns, with an ERA of 3.59 and a 3.75 WHIP.

Mahle’s 3.75 ERA from last season is a career-high through a full season.

The 3.59 ERA was from the shortened season with a 60-game schedule. He did his best to duplicate it last year in a 33-game season.

Mahle has a career ERA of 4.36 with a 1.33 WHIP. He’s closer to those numbers this season. The sixth-year hurler has an ERA of 4.48 and a 1.30 WHIP going into this afternoon.

In his previous three starts, Mahle has posted an ERA of 4.58 and a 1.53 WHIP. He’s been less efficient at home, with an ERA of 4.99 and a 1.55 WHIP.

Mahle has yet to win a game at the Great American Ball Park, with a record of 0-5 in Cincinnati.

The Cards have tallied 3 home runs and 8 RBIs across 126 at-bats against Mahle. He likely isn’t going to get through the start with a clean sheet.

Going on the road has been no problem for Mikolas. He carries a 2.83 ERA and 1.11 WHIP into this afternoon at the Great American Ball Park.

Mikolas has been in good shape against the Reds, with a .198 batting average and .219 OBA in 122 at-bats.

If the Cardinals are interested on Sunday, and they should be given the divisional race with the Brewers, leaving Cincinnati with another win is likely.
