St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers Pick – MLB June 22, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers are back at American Family Field for the third of fourth matchup in this series in Milwaukee.

The Brewers and Cardinals took a split in the first two games, with the Brewers riding their pitching staff to a 2-0 win in the opener.

Miles Mikolas had a strong performance with 4 hits and 2 earned runs allowed in 6.1 innings of work. That wasn’t enough with Corbin Burnes dealing.

The Cardinals responded in nice form with a 6-2 win last night. Jack Flaherty didn’t get off to a hot start with 3 hits and 2 earned runs conceded in 3 innings, but kudos to the bullpen.

The NL Central is tight at the moment, with the Brewers and Cardinals in a tie at 39-31. Expect the Cardinals and Brewers to continue to duel this season.

It’s all St. Louis and Milwaukee, with the third-place Pirates well behind at 28-39.

It isn’t easy to say who has the advantage in the division. The Brewers and Cardinals are too evenly matched to draw any conclusions this early in the season. This race could go down to the final games of the regular season.

The Cardinals and Brewers will take turns running hot and cool. Despite the loss yesterday, the Brewers are the hotter team at the moment.

The Brewers won four straight games and five wins in six attempts before faltering. They will send lefty Eric Lauer to the bump to counter veteran Adam Wainwright tonight.

Cardinals vs. Brewers Prediction:

Adam Wainwright doesn’t believe in looking at his birthday because he’s still pitching at a high level as a 40-year-old. Wainwright is going into this one with an ERA of 3.06 and a 1.24 WHIP.

It looks like Wainwright could reach pitching in the majors at 45 years old.

I don’t anticipate Wainwright holding a 3.06 ERA, but he’s likely still going to be able to chew up some innings barring injuries and his motivation. He is coming off his worst performance of the season.

Wainwright is coming off a shaky outing against the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox hot to Wainwright for 7 hits and 4 earned runs across 6.1 innings.

His start prior to that tough outing wasn’t the best, either. Wainwright allowed 8 hits and 3 earned runs to the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium. He had to work to get out of innings without further damage.

Wainwright has an ERA of 3.40 and a 1.32 WHIP as opposed to a 2.68 ERA and 1.14 WHIP at home.

This Brewers lineup has had success against Wainwright in his career. They are hitting .298 with a .345 OBP in 222 at-bats. That includes 9 home runs and 33 RBIs.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games on the road
  • 1-9 overall in their previous ten games on the road as an underdog
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five fifth game of a series
  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games versus a team with a winning record
  • 8-3 overall in their previous 11 games versus the NL Central

  • Record (Last 10): 6-4
  • 5-0 overall in their previous five games as a betting favorite
  • 21-8 overall in their previous 29 games versus NL Central
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games
  • 37-18 overall in their previous 55 games on a Wednesday
  • UNDER is 4-1 in their previous five games

  • Eric Lauer enters with a solid ERA of 3.57 and a 1.19 WHIP through 68 innings in 2022. The lefty hasn’t been at his best recently, but Lauer is back at American Family Field where he thrives.

Lauer owns an ERA of 1.04 and a 0.96 WHIP across 26 innings at home.

Conversely, he has a 5.14 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP on the road. After allowing 12 earned runs on the road against the Nationals and Reds, Lauer should return to form in Milwaukee.

This is likely a close one at American Family Field, but the Brewers likely ride Lauer to a win tonight. They’ve felt comfortable against Wainwright in the past, and that should continue tonight.
