The New York Mets have hosting duties for two more days against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets and Cards split the first two games, with the Mets opening the series for a 3-1 win and a 4-3 win for the Cardinals yesterday.
Miles Mikolas and Trevor Williams dueled it out in the first game, with Williams going 4 innings with no runs allowed. Steven Matz turned in the best performance last night, as he lasted 5 innings with 3 hits and 2 earned runs cocneded in a 4-3 win for the Cards.

The Mets are currently in control of the NL East. They have a six-game lead on the Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins. Where have we seen this before, though?
This team has been in control of the division before and their lead evaporates with the humidity in the summer. Injuries were a problem last season, so we can’t completely blame poor play.
The best sign for the Mets is that they have a six-game lead in the division even without deGrom on the bump. The rest of the pitching staff has handled his absence well, with the addition of Max Scherzer softening the blow.
The Mets look too dangerous with deGrom and Scherzer in the rotation together. That’s going to be a two-headed beast and the best 1-2 combo in the majors. That’s if deGrom comes back healthy and able.
Scherzer is set to get the starting nod for the Mets, while Jordan Hicks is being called on by the Cardinals in Queens tonight. Head below for our best Mets vs. Cardinals pick on May 18, 2022.

Cardinals vs. Mets Prediction:
Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom in the same rotation sounds scary. Scherzer is off to a nice start with the Mets this season.
In his first year with the Mets, Scherzer is going into tonight with an ERA of 2.66 and a 0.91 WHIP. He’s coming off a 2-1 loss against the Seattle Mariners five days back.
As is the case throughout his career, Scherzer is consistently good, with 1 or no earned runs allowed in four of his previous six starts. He’s been in good form at Citi Field, with a 2.70 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in Queens.
The Mets have been solid throughout their rotation, without deGrom having thrown a pitch this season. They are fourth in the majors with 3.46 runs allowed per 9 innings and fifth with a .218 batting average.
The bullpen has been in fine form with an ERA of 3.41 and a 1.17 WHIP. The Mets are in good hands with a competent bullpen when Scherzer leaves the game.

Jordan Hicks has acted as a starter and bullpen opener for the Cardinals this season. He’s handled his responsibilities pretty well.
Hicks enters with an ERA of 4.15 and a 1.15 WHIP across 23.1 innings on the mound. The hasn’t allowed more than 3 earned runs in a start so far.
Hicks is coming off a solid showing at home versus the Giants, with 3 hits and 3 earned runs conceded through 5 innings. 3 hits is the most he’s allowed in an outing in 2022.
It’s the Cardinals bullpen that has been holding the pitching staff up. They have been in good form as well, with a 3.22 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. This is how the Cards will stay competitive in the NL Central.
I’m looking at a 3-2 or 4-2 final score at Citi Field tonight. The UNDER appears worth a look between the Cardinals and Mets in Queens.
