The St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants are on the diamond at Oracle Park for the first of a four-game series in the Bay Area. The Giants are coming off a tough 9-1 loss to the LA Dodgers on Wednesday night.
Alex Wood wasn’t that bad, as he made it through 5.1 innings with 3 earned runs allowed. However, the bullpen ran into problems, as they allowed 6 earned runs to take the Giants out of the game.

The Giants typically can’t win games like this. They are far better off when the pitching staff is in good form and winning 3-1 and 4-2 kinds of games. That’s when the Giants are at their best.
The Giants head into Thursday night with a record of 14-10 and 2.5 games behind the LA Dodgers for the lead in the NL West.
The Dodgers beat the Giants in two of two games for a sweep at Dodger Stadium. It was a brief two-game tilt to get the juices flowing between these two hated fanbases. The Giants go back home to welcome the Cardinals at Oracle Park.
St. Louis is going into this one even with the Giants at 14-10 on the season. The Cards are coming off a 10-0 win over the Kansas City Royals yesterday. They were coming off a 7-1 loss in the first game and changed their rune the next day.
The Cardinals have been very much up and down recently, as they enter the Bay Area with a loss in three of their previous five attempts. The last time they met the Giants, they won back-to-back games at home, 3-1 and 2-1 last July.
Mikolas has been in Cy Young form to open the season and will look to stay hot in San Francisco. Llovera will open this one in a bullpen game for the Giants.

Cardinals vs. Giants Prediction:
It’s too early to suggest Cy Young candidates, but Miles Mikolas is pitching like a guy that wants to win the coveted award in the National League. He has been one of the best in the National League, and certainly the most underrated hurler in 2022.
Mikolas is going into Thursday night hot through his first five starts. He hasn’t looked bad in any of his appearances and should stay in good form in the Bay Area.
Mikolas is going into this contest with an ERA of 1.52 and a 0.84 WHIP in five games. His best effort has come on the road, where Mikolas has recorded an ERA of 0.77 and a 0.69 WHIP in 13.1 innings on the bump.
Mikolas’ worst outing was his season opener versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 9. He was tagged for 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 3.2 innings. However, since then, Miokolas has been untouchable.
Mikolas posted an ERA of 0.93 and a 0.67 WHIP in his previous three starts. He gave up only 2 runs in 21.1 innings on the hill. The Giants are hitting just .191 versus Mikolas in 111 at-bats.

The Giants’ bullpen did not hold up well last night, but should bounce back at home. That wasn’t like the Giants’ pitching staff. Note that San Franciso ranks as one of the better bullpens in the major leagues.
San Francisco has an ERA of 3.09 and a 1.19 WHIP from their bullpen. They rank in the top-10 in the majors despite struggling to get into a groove last night.
It’s unlikely that the Giants are going to look bad on the bump in consecutive games, especially at Oracle Park in San Francisco. Mikolas has been in the zone and could be tough for the offense, though. Look for the UNDER to be the best bet in this one in the Bay Area.
