Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers Pick – MLB August 6, 2022

The Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers meet at Comerica Park for the third of four games in downtown Detroit. Tampa is looking to set up a sweep on Sunday with a win at Comerica tonight. The Rays emerged with a 6-2 and 5-3 win over the last two days.

MIGGY-LESS TIGERS OFF THE MARK
The Tigers weren’t exactly world beaters with Miguel Cabrera in the lineup. He’s well past his prime, but is hitting a healthy .268 this season. Cabrera at least makes pitchers work for outs.

It isn’t happening in this series, as the Tigers have been unable to come up with a clutch hit. Jeffrey Springs was sharp in the series opener, with 4 hits and no earned runs allowed across 6 innings. Corey Kluber didn’t exit last night without any blemishes, but the Tigers failed to find a clutch hit.

The Rays are in the wildcard race in the American League.

The New York Yankees are clear in the AL East, so the Rays have to look at Plan B and enter the postseason with a wildcard. Tampa is currently 57-49 and 12.5 games behind the Yankees in the division.

It’s not statistically impossible to catch the Yanks, but realistically, this doesn’t appear possible. They currently have a half-game advantage on the Rays for the second wildcard. The Orioles are only 1.5 games off the wildcard. Wild.

The Blue Jays are going into Saturday with the top wildcard at 59-47. They’re well back of the Yankees as well by 10.5 games.

GM Al Avila has to be done after this season, right? His last gasp had to be the second-half of this season and it still isn’t working out. The Tigers were expected to at least be somewhat competitive this season, but there hasn’t been much improvement to note.

Detroit is going into the weekend with a record of 42-66 and without their leader in Miggy. He’s dealing with knee problems and has been out recently. The Tigers are dead last in a bad AL Central on Saturday.

Rays vs. Tigers Prediction:

The Tigers are going to need to find clutch hits against a Cy Young contender this evening. Shane McClanahan was one of the most unlikely Cy Young candidates going into 2022 but here we are.

McClanahan has fallen behind JV in the Cy Young over the last two weeks, but still in the mix.

He is going into Comerica Park with an ERA of 2.07 and a 0.83 WHIP through 122 innings and 20 starts. McClanahan showed flashes of brilliance in his debut last year.

PROMISING RESULTS
McClanahan notched an ERA of 3.43 and a 1.27 WHIP in 25 games last year. He showed a bit of his potential, with improvement expected in 2022.

This much of an improvement, though? It definitely wasn’t projected, but McClanahan has ace stuff for the Rays. He’s also been a sharp one on the road.

McClanahan has posted an ERA of 1.62 and a 0.68 WHIP as a visitor in 2022.

He’s coming off his worst performance of the season at home against the Guardians. McClanahan was tagged for 7 hits and 5 earned runs across 4.1 innings of work. However, expect a bounce-back spot at Comerica Park.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers Betting Trends:

Rays

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 19-9 overall in their previous 28 third game of a series
  • 24-10 overall in their previous 34 games versus a team with a winning percentage worse than 40%
  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games at Detroit
  • 4-0 overall in their previous four games versus the Tigers
  • OVER is 7-2 in their previous nine games on a Saturday

Tigers

  • Record (Last 10): 3-7
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games after a loss
  • 0-4 overall in their previous four games on a Saturday
  • 4-10 overall in their previous 14 third game of a series
  • 2-5 overall in their previous seven games at home
  • 0-4 overall in their previous four games versus the Rays

  • Look for McClanahan to dice up the Tigers in this on Saturday. He should be in good form against one of the worst offenses in the majors.

The Tigers are hitting .226 with 3.30 runs per 9 innings for 30th.

Through their last five, they’ve hit just .186 with 2.74 runs per 9 innings. Against lefties, they notched a .167 batting average and 1.54 runs per 9 innings. Not going to work against McClanahan.

The Tigers are hitting only .171 vs left-handed pitchers in their last ten attempts. Again, this should be a spot for McClanahan to look like a Cy Young contender.

Tigers’ starter Garrett Hill is going to the bump with an ERA of 5.88 and a 1.35 WHIP through 26 innings. The rookie is gaining experience for the future, but isn’t currently in the best form. He’s netted a 6.00 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across his last three starts.

This looks like another win for the Rays. Expect Tampa to clear by at least 2 runs behind McClanahan’s arm.
