Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros Pick – MLB May 19, 2022

The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros are scheduled for a four-game series at Minute Maid Park. The Astros look like the team to beat in the NL West again in 2022.

Houston has won the NL West every year since 2017, not including the shortened 60-game campaign in 2020. The Oakland Athletics were in the clear in what was a bizarre season that didn’t feel anything like a normal year.

The Astros are off to a quick start out of the gates with a record of 24-14. They have a one-game lead on the LA Angels going into tonight. If the Angels stay healthy, notably Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout on the field together, they should be competitive.

Houston is coming off a 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox yesterday. They dropped two of three games for a series loss at Fenway Park.

Finally back home after a nine-game road trip, the Astros will give the starting nod to Framber Valdez.

The Rangers are hot with four straight wins going into tonight. They are on the heels of a sweep of the Angels at home following a 6-5 win on Wednesday.

While the ‘Stros are exiting a long road trip, the Rangers were on a nine-game homestand. They beat the Royals in two of three games, two of three losses to the Red Sox, and then most recently swept the Angels.

Glenn Otto is scheduled to get the starting call for the Rangers. He will do his best to outpitch Valdez in this one at Minute Maid Park. Head below for our free Rangers vs. Astros prediction on May 19, 2022.

Rangers vs. Astros Prediction:

Framber Valdez has been in great form through his first seven games. With Lance McCullers on the 60-day IL, Valdez is asked to do more in the rotation. That said, he’s already been effective and reliable for the Astros.

Valdez has been the best kept secret in the Astros’ rotation. He is coming off a 3.57 ERA and 3.14 ERA the past two years. In his biggest workload, Valdez posted an ERA of 3.14 and a 1.25 WHIP.

Valdez enters Minute Maid with an ERA of 2.93 and a 1.28 WHIP. He is consistent across even outings this season. The lefty was hammered for 6 earned runs against the Angels on April 19, but solid otherwise.

The Rangers are hitting .242 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs against Valdez.

If this gets into a high-scoring game, the Astros are better equipped to win this one. They have the better matchup against Otto. Otto is going into tonight with an ERA of 6.38 and a 1.42 WHIP.

He’s pitched 19 innings and hasn’t been able to get on track. Otto was beamed for 8 hits and 8 earned runs in 4 innings versus the Red Sox in his most recent showing.

Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros Betting Trends:

Rangers

  • Record (Last 10): 6-4
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games versus a team with a winning record
  • 21-48 overall in their previous 69 games as an underdog on the road
  • 8-20 overall in their previous 28 games on a Thursday
  • 4-22 overall in their previous 26 games at Houston
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games versus the Astros

Astros

  • Record (Last 10): 7-3
  • 13-3 overall in their previous 16 games
  • 10-0 overall in their previous ten games versus the Rangers at home
  • 8-0 overall in their previous eight games at home
  • 21-6 overall in their previous 27 games on a Thursday
  • 5-1 overall in their previous six games after a loss

  • Otto needs to be much better in Houston tonight if the Rangers are going to have success. He’s in his second season after getting his feet wet a year ago.

Otto appeared in six games last year, posting a 9.26 ERA and 1.71 WHIP.

The ‘Stros have notched a .253 average with 1 home run and 4 RBIs against Otto in 42 at-bats. Following a long road trip, expect the ‘Stros to have some fun tonight.

Houston has been red-hot at home recently, with eight straight wins. They’ve also beaten the Rangers in ten straight at Minute Maid Park.

The Rangers are an improved team, but the ‘Stros should appreciate being back at Minute Maid on Thursday night. Conversely, look for the Rangers to regress after a big sweep against the Angels at home.

After a sloppy performance offensively in a 5-1 loss at Fenway, look for much better from the bats against Otto.

I’m playing the Astros to record a win by at least 2 runs to cover the runline in their first game at home since a 5-0 win on May 8.
