Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels Pick – MLB July 28, 2022

The Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels have a four-game series at Angel Stadium in Anaheim from Thursday night through Sunday afternoon. The Rangers are on a three-game slide going into Anaheim following a 4-2 loss on Wednesday.

Jon Gray was pitching well and carried the Rangers into the 7th inning, then Julio Rodriguez happened. That’s where things went astray for Gray, as he allowed 3 earned runs and had to leave the game after conceding just 1 run up to that point. Gray broke, while Marco Gonzales held strong with 4 hits and 2 earned runs allowed in 7 frames.

The Rangers haven’t been a good team in recent years, but they spent money on Marcus Semien to be competitive in 2022. They signed Semien and added Corey Seager from the Mariners.

With a record of 43-54, this has been a failure of a season for the Rangers. They were expecting to get into the postseason, but this isn’t going to work out. The Rangers are 20 games behind the Astros for the lead in the AL West.

They didn’t sign Semien to a seven-year $171-million deal to lose.

The Angels are another disappointing team. The Rangers and Angels are two of the most disappointing teams this season. I’d give the edge to the Angels being the more disappointing team.

Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani and what do the Angels have to show for two of the best players in baseball? A record of 42-56 and 21.5 games behind the Astros. Brutal.

Things weren’t going well when they were healthy, and now Trout is on the injury list with a back ailment. It’s a rare back condition and his timetable to return is TBD. He’s at least a week away from working himself back into the field.

The Rangers are sending Spencer Howard to the mound. Howard has a tough one with Ohtani on the bump for the Angels. Head below for our free Rangers vs. Angels pick on July 28, 2022.

Rangers vs. Angels Prediction:

The Rangers are asking Spencer Howard to get his stuff together after a rough performance last week. He was smacked for 6 hits and 4 earned runs against the Oakland A’s at the Coliseum. Howard was coming off a couple of solid performances against the A’s and Mariners.

Howard conceded 3 earned runs in 10 innings in those two spots.

He’s been in top form at times, but a few bad outings have skewed his numbers considerably. Howard is entering this start with an ERA of 7.11 and a 1.78 WHIP across seven outings. That’s obviously not good.

The Phillies had high hopes for Howard in Philadelphia. He spent a year and a half with the Phillies before trading him last year.

Are the Phillies going to regret that deal? Howard has shown why they were so high on him at times this season. After returning down from the minors, he came back and pitched well before flaring up in Oakland.

The Angels are not a dangerous offense without Trout in the lineup.

Along with no Trout, they’ve been without Anthony Rendon for a while. Even healthy, the Angels were failing to play as they should be with this talent.

Overall, they’re 26th with a batting average of .231 and 4.01 runs per 9 innings for 25th. Swinging and missing is a problem, as the Angels are 30th in strikeouts.

Texas Rangers vs. LA Angels Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 2-8
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games
  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games after a loss
  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games versus a team with a losing record
  • UNDER is 6-2 in their previous eight games on a Thursday
  • UNDER is 24-9-2 in their previous 35 games at Anaheim

  • Record (Last 10): 4-6
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games after a win
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games versus the AL West
  • UNDER is 6-0 in their previous six games on a Thursday
  • UNDER is 7-2-1 in their previous ten games after their opponent concedes 2 or fewer runs
  • UNDER is 9-2-1 in their previous 12 games after conceding 2 or fewer runs

  • This could be a spot for Howard to get his confidence back against the overrated Angels. However, it’s going to require a special good performance because Ohtani is on the other side tonight.

Ohtani enters this start with an ERA of 2.80 and a 1.00 WHIP.

At Angel Stadium, Ohtani has posted a 2.05 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. He’s coming off his worst start of the season last week.

Ohtani was grilled for 6 hits and 6 earned runs in a frustrating outing vs the Braves. However, expect him to have a crisper showing in this one.

The Rangers are 20th in the majors with a team batting average of .239. They are hitting just .071 against Ohtani, with 2 hits in 22 at-bats. No runs and only 2 walks.

The best place to be in this one is probably with the UNDER. Howard likely picks himself up and Ohtani does Ohtani things at Angel Stadium.
