The Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros play game-two on Tuesday, following a pitching duel between Michael Fulmer and Brad Peacock yesterday. Fulmer pitched brilliantly, but it was Peacock who was able to outlast Fulmer to give the Astros a 1-0 win.
The only blemish on Fulmer’s resume was a Jose Altuve RBI early in the 1st inning. He was perfect from there, but the Tigers were never able to hit Peacock. If Peacock can stay healthy, he’s going to be a big weapon in the Astros’ arsenal this summer.
Peacock will sit back and watch this one from afar, as another guy making noise in Houston, Lance McCullers, will have his turn in the rotation. From early indications, this isn’t just a one-man rotation in Houston. Dallas Keuchel, who has cemented himself as the ace of the club over the past few years, is getting some help from his comrades in 2017. McCullers is one of those pitchers who has been on fire on the hump.
As a team, the Astros have been one of the best performing teams in MLB thus far in the regular season. Houston may have fell flat last year, but they’re trying to show that it was a fluke. The ‘Stros enter Tuesday night with a record of 30-15, good for 1st in the AL West.
There isn’t much competition in the division for the Astros, at least for the moment, so right now they assume a 6-game lead on the Rangers. Additionally, they are 1st in all of MLB, and the first team to reach 30 wins on the 2017 season. The Astros will look for more tonight, as they take on the Tigers and Jordan Zimmermann. Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros Pick
Jordan Zimmermann (4-2, 6.25 ERA) vs. Lance McCullers Jr. (4-1, 2.65 ERA)
The Tigers are a team where when the pitching is on, they can’t get any offense. When their offense is on, then the pitching is getting ravished. It isn’t too often that the pitching holds up thanks to a rather weak bullpen. The Tigers’ bullpen ranks 26th with a 4.96 ERA. Zimmermann has been getting bulldozed over as well. He was supposed to be a replacement for Max Scherzer, but the outlook hasn’t been so great with him. Between injuries and less than ideal pitching, Zimmermann has largely been a bust for the Tigers. He owns a 6.25 ERA and has consistently been bad.
Note that in his last three starts, Zimmermann has allowed 4 runs in each. In six of his last seven outings, he’s surrendered at least 4 runs. Conversely, McCullers has been strong as ever. In fact, he’s been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball of late. Note that he didn’t allowed a run in his last three starts. In four of his last six, he put a donut up on the board. At home, McCullers has posted an ERA of 2.08 with a 1.04 WHIP. I believe the Astros should be able to make easy work of Zimmermann and the Tigers tonight. They look like a good MLB pick on Tuesday.
